Let’s Go Get Giannis

Post by Lipoli390 »

Ok. The Bucks were eliminated again. Giannis has one more season left on his contract and his team looks like it's hit the wall with no where to go but down. It's not like he's surrounded by a lot of young talent with upside. His best teammates are already on the back side of their prime.

So maybe it's time for the Bucks to flip the switch to rebuild mold. If they do, I think the Wolves organization has a moral obligation to help the Bucks with that task. If the Bucks see the light and realize they have no choice but to rebuild from scratch, then the Wolves should be right by their side to help. In that spirit, Gersson should call the Bucks and make the following offer for Giannis:

The Wolves two first round picks this year (#1 & 17)
Jarrett Culver
Nowell
James Johnson
Omari Spellman
Jacob Evans
The future 2nd round pick the Wolves received in the Butler deal

If the Bucks are worried about losing Giannis, this deal would make sure he leaves the Eastern Conference and they'd get an immediate infusion of draft assets and young talent. Keep in mind, the Wolves would bear a significant risk of Giannis leaving after only one season here.

Alright, perhaps I've lost touch with reality. But reality can be so depressing as a Wolves fan. So just imagine a starting lineup of Russell, Beasley. Giannis, Towns and H-Gomez or whoever. I could see one or two good veteran free agents interested in signing with the Wolves under those circumstances to join Okogie, Naz Reid. Jake Layman and McLaughlin as a pretty formidable bench.

I don't think that offer is actually enough for the reigning MVP, and I also think Giannis Antetokounmpo is a rare superstar who will show a great deal of loyalty to Milwaukee and stay so long as they want him.

I love the idea. I just don't think it has a chance of happening for various reasons.

If I were the Bucks, I wouldn't do it. I might need another couple future firsts unprotected.

Another team would blow that offer out of the water without batting an eye. If I was the Bucks I would rather take my chances that Giannis stays or I even make a run next year at a championship next year than take that offer. This season was a weird one obviously but if I was the Bucks or a Bucks fan I would now be nervous and wondering what to do...Giannis is probably thinking about what to do as well. This is why one approach is piling up assets for a future move. I hope things work out for the Bucks.

I like how Lip has made this a morality play. But I think it's the other way around. We're the traveler that has been beaten, stripped of our clothes, and left for dead in a ditch by the road. Milwaukee is the Good Samaritan, offering us care and comfort in the form of a transcendent star!

Obviously, my was at least partially planted in cheek when I wrote my post to start this thread. Therefore, I agree with all the responses so far. But my tongue wasn't totally in my cheek since it's not totally lunacy to imagine a potential Giannis trade now whereas a even just a year ago it would have been totally unthinkable.

There is a threshold question as to whether the Bucks might be open to dealing Giannis based on the risk of him leaving after next season. I agree with those who don't believe the Bucks are there yet. If the Bucks are open to dealing Giannis, I agree that my suggested offer would not be enough. However, remember that my hypothetical had Rosas calling the Bucks to make this offer. It was an initial offer that would likely elicit a counter if the Bucks were open to the idea of trading Giannis.

So the next question is how much more the Wolves would have to give to have a reasonable shot at pulling off a deal for Giannis. Do the Wolves even have the assets to get a deal done? I'm not sure. At a minimum, we'd end up trading away a lot of future first round picks in addition to the assets I mentioned. Not having our first or second round pick next year makes it even more difficult. Are there other teams better positioned with the assets it would take to do a deal? Probably.

The bitter truth is that it's highly unlikely the Wolves will be able to pull off a trade for Giannis, Simmons, Booker or Beal. And Giannis would obviously be the toughest to get. So there you have it. Once again, all roads lead back to the Wolves drafting the right players this year and what the Wolves might be able to get in return if they were to trade down from #1 to a lower lottery position or what they can get for their #17 and 33 picks.

Just saw this:

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is slated to be a free agent after the 2020-21 season, could hold the league hostage this offseason if he were to decide a new destination is in order. "It's not happening. That's not happening," Antetokounmpo told Yahoo Sports after the Bucks were eliminated in five games in the second round by the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. "Some see a wall and go in [another direction]. I plow through it. We just have to get better as a team, individually and get right back at it next season." - via Chris Haynes @ Yahoo! Sports

A lot of stars might say what Giannis was quoted as saying in this article. But when Giannis says it, I believe he means it. The key will be whether Giannis signs a super-max deal before next season. I would expect the Bucks to make the offer, which would confirm they're not interested in moving on from Giannis and rebuilding. I think Giannis would sign the super-max deal if offered. If that happens, I'll like him even more. But if he refuses to sign, then I think the Bucks will be in a position where they'll have to shop him. One unidentified NBA executive said the Warriors are in the best position to get him if he's available. Another executive suggested that a robust market for Giannis might not develop because of the risk that he'd leave after only one season.

Are we adding Towns to the offer in the OP? Otherwise, Rosas doesn't even get to finish the phone call without getting hung up on.

As for the Bucks, I was slightly surprised when they didn't match Indiana's offer to Brogdon. It seemed much more egregious once the playoffs hit and Bledsoe sucked balls again and Marvin Williams was playing 20+ minutes and Korver was the big surprise shooter off the bench.

Then again, the Bucks are run by hedge fund guys, right? I'm sure they used some algorithm formula to help them with that decision... and winning a title came in somewhere behind make more tens of millions.

Giannis would get an unprecedented deal. I think for a player like that it would be 3 or 4 unprotected 1sts based on what Davis got. 2 picks in a weak draft and a bunch of guys who wont be in the league much longer is not going to cut it.
