We signed Juancho for around $7 million per year - 2 years guaranteed. Here are the debut stats of the guys I wanted the Wolves to sign instead of Juancho:
Bobby Portis: 14 points, 13 rebounds and 7-15 shooting from the field in 20 minutes. Portis signed 2-year deal at 3.7M per year.
Nerlens Noel: 10 points, 8 boards, 2 blocks and a steal in 25 minutes. Hit 5 of 7 FG attempts. Noel signed a 1-year deal at $5.0M.
Harry Giles: In his debut, he had 18 points, 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks in 25 minutes, hitting 8 of his 12 FG attempts. In his second game, he had 19 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block in 26 minutes while hitting 6 of his 11 FG attempts, 1 of 1 three-point attempts and 6 of his 6 free throw attempts. Giles signed a one-year deal with Portland for only $1.67M.
I don't believe there's another team out there prepared to pay Juancho $7 million a year for two years. And even if there was, it made no sense for the Wolves to pay him that sort of money when guys like Portis, Noel and Giles were available for less. In fact, I'd take any one of those three over Juancho on Juancho's contract. Given what these other guys signed for, it's clear that Rosas and his front office cohorts preferred Juancho over all of them. And that's just another reason why I have so little faith in the Rosas regime.

So I hated the Hernangomez deal. I thought we paid him a good size yearly salary for shooting a non repeatable 3 pt % as a wolf. He will earn his contact if he continues to shoot well from 3.
I also think there is some value in having a 7 million dollar expiring contact next year and combining Rubio expiring hits 26 million so can trade for any 1st year max player to match salary.
So I can see the logic in the contract but it will be judged by his on court production and the asset of a 7 million dollar expiring. I still don't like the player or contract but we have to see what Rosas can potentially do with the contract asset next offseason

Rosas was fishing around for a legit vet PF and nothing ever came to fruition. I suspect that's why Juancho's deal came in a little late. But I agree, he might be one of the least inspiring players on this roster and it's hard to believe we're paying him that much.

Juancho just doesn't do anything well. Maybe hit the open 3 at a respectable clip? Layman looks like a far superior player and I guess it's nice to see Layman in the starting lineup.
Re: Free Agent Big Watch
I'm curious to see what Juancho's rebounding numbers looks like playing as a full time PF. Since we are going on 1 preseason game 6 rebounds in 17 mins ain't shabby.
People don't like Juancho's finishing ability around the rim. They are gonna love RHJ then too (If he makes the team) as it looks like statistically he isn't any better. Neither is Portis.
Also an interesting dynamic might be happening with the Knicks. Thibs started Nerlens over Mitchell Robinson the first game.
Also let's remind ourselves pthis is preseason.

Yes, some reports suggest Rosas was "fishing around" for a legitimate vet PF. I can understand striking out on Millsap who understandably re-signed with Denver. But I'm sure he understood that signing Millsap was a long shot. It appears that Rosas had his mind set on Juancho once the long-shot effort to sign Millsap fell through. It seems obvious since a number of other possibilities signed with other teams for considerably less.
Re: Free Agent Big Watch
I think it is worth noting that Rosas has accumulated a lot of decent/promising guards and wings. Enough that we are left wondering how everyone gets minutes, and how we can keep McLaughlin. This could be a lead up to a trade for the PF we really want, either now or by the trade deadline.

Jon K reported Juancho came in hot with a 10+ million contract demand. That was a big part of why they were looking around and really if you can get Millsap for a short term mid-level deal it's a no brainer. I'd guess they could have gotten Juancho for a little less money for the 3 year deal but that team option for the 3rd year is a good one.
Personally if I could have signed RHJ for a vet min deal (probably wouldn't be able to know that at the time and without another guy signed we wouldn't have had leverage) then I would have done that instead as a value proposition.
I'm higher on Juancho than most here so a couple million more for him than I would have paid doesn't bother me too much. Let's see how the roster plays out. Giles is the guy that intrigued me the most. I know a number of Kings fans really liked him.

Yes, would've given jaunchos contract to Giles in a heartbeat.

Agreed. What's really sad is that Giles signed for one year at the minimum $1.67M. Noel signed for one year at $5M. It is mind-boggling that the Wolves agreed to pay Juancho $7M per year for two guaranteed years. With the full nearly $9M MLE to spend, the Wolves likely could have signed both Giles and Noel or both Giles and Portis for no more than (probably less) than they're paying Juancho. If up to me, I would have signed Giles and Noel. Giles is a lottery talent held back over the years by injuries. Noel is the sort of rim protector this team sorely needs.
