Is It All About the System?

Post by Lipoli390 »

I'm a bit irritated with Gersson's obsession with "the system." Apparently, the reason Nowell isn't getting much playing time is because he hasn't mastered the Wolves system, which is being taught in Iowa. The word is that Nowell's strength is shooting off the dribble, but "the system" demands that he be more of a catch-and-shoot player. Also, apparently Spellman was sent to Iowa instead of Vanderbilt because Vanderbilt fits the system better than Spellman. We sure could have used Spellman tonight instead of Vanderbilt.

I'll just say this. The best NBA organizations have always adapted their systems to fit their personnel. They accumulate the best talent and then fit the style to their talent. Apparently, Rosas has a different idea of how to be a successful NBA franchise. We'll see.

It'll look much better next year after we hire D'Antoni because Houston will let him go after they don't win the title this year.

The system needs to be tweaked. We are
living and dying by the 3. That is why we get big leads when we get hot and end up losing the game when the 3 isnt falling and when teams start defending the 3 better.

We all but eliminated the post up and mid range. We should be going to towns more in the posts. I want to see up post up dlo as well due to his size advantage at the pg.

I get not settling for long twos off the dribble and just either attack the rim or pull back for a 3. But the midrange game can still be effective. Simply run players off screen for wide open jumper can be an effective and less risky ply. Look at the warriors, they had steph, klay and kd the last couple of years and one of their top plays was running themm off screens for an open mid range shot. That usually open up the floor for them as the 3's are going to be a much better look when they are hitting everywhere on the floor.

Stop trying to be houston and be more like the warriors. The system should be about generating easy looks for the players and not strictly to generate 3's with this dribble drive offense.

"The secret of basketball is that it's not about basketball."
- Isiah Thomas

"The secret of basketball is that it's only about math."
- Modern-day analytics permeating the NBA

I'm getting frustrated.

And it's not just the Timberwolves. Basketball is magical because it's more than a math problem. But it's being treated as such more and more and more. And we're seeing it firsthand now with this regime. They're playing to the math... and simply moving the numbers around until they reach the correct sum a certain percentage of the time.

As most of you know by now... I really dig the NBA in large part because of its rich, storied history of characters and stories and crazy things that have happened over the years. Those idiosyncrasies may be getting lost a bit as we're seeing this new hyper-focus on a more homogenized game?

Or, I'm just this guy... I haven't quite decided myself yet...

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said that at no point during the difficult start to this season -- which included a 5-27 streak before the trade deadline -- did he consider firing coach Ryan Saunders, who is in the first year of his contract as the youngest coach (33) in the NBA. "No, no, no, he is hired," Taylor said. "A young guy and he is going to get better as time goes on and we just have to give him that time."

Taylor, who also owns the Star Tribune, said the new players should be a better fit for Saunders. "[Saunders] is excited about this change that now he has guys that can play the kind of basketball he wants," Taylor said. "He is really a believer in the three-point shot, moving the ball fast, and getting up and down the court. He needed some players that were better three-point shooters than what we had previously."

And this is a big part of why I never wanted Ryan Saunders to be the head coach. Glen Taylor will never be able to fire him. He'll never let him go. That last name and overall country club relationship will keep him in his position until Taylor eventually sells this shithole of a franchise -- or dies.

By hiring Ryan as head coach, Glen boxed himself in. But Glen fired McHale and Flip, so I wouldn't totally discount the possibility that Glen let's Ryan go after this season. He can simply defer to Rosas and then give Ryan a front office position. Do I think that will happen? No. But I'm not quite as pessimistic as you on this one - although I'm close.

I can't totally kill Ryan only because they're asking to make chocolate cake out of crap. Vanterpool has a great reputation in the NBA, yet he comes here and the defense stinks. A coach can only do but so much in this situation.
