Hustle - The Movie
Hustle - The Movie
I finally watched the movie, Hustle. It was actually pretty good. Solid script and good acting. It was also fun to see all the current and former NBA players and coaches in the movie. But it was also weird seeing current NBA players as fictitious characters. Weirdest of all was watching Juancho play a young budding superstar. It just didn't work for me because we all know who Juancho really is. However, I should note that Juancho has a future in movies. Seriously, the guy can act. Of course, the best part as a Wolves fan was watching Ant. His charisma jumps off the screen. I hated to see our Ant play the bad guy. Next time, I want to see him play the good guy. But he has this naughty streak in his character that worked for him playing the character he portrayed in the movie.

To me Juancho playing the role worked for me because to some extent my perspective is that Juancho is a guy that struggles with the mental aspect of the game. He doesn't have superstar talent but he does have a really nice overall skill set for someone of his overall size. He signed with the Raptors and I think if he can become a guy that can play minutes off the bench (think he struggles when he doesn't play bigger minutes and knows his role) and be more consistent he can be quite valuable relatively speaking. So in a way this movie mirrored what I see in Juancho. A talented guy that does really love the game but has to overcome something else mentally to get where he needs to go.
And yes Juancho and Edwards were terrific in the movie. It's no real surprise that Edwards was so good but Juancho was terrific and that's a bit of a surprise. Sandler really nailed it when he picked him for the movie.

Monster - I admire your creative perspective. But the character in the movie was a supposedly a generational talent with a passion for the game who just needed training and confidence. I found it impossible to get past the reality that the actor who portrayed him is a minor role player bouncing around from team to team. Juancho's acting was terrific, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief knowing who Juancho really is. The character was essentially an undiscovered Luka Doncic. It could have worked if Luka had played the role. But Juancho's probably a better actor and probably needs to think about a second career. :)

I enjoyed the movie but I agree it was hard to get past Juancho as the elite defensive stopper.
I will say I loved Ant as the villain. It is hard to be as likable as Ant came across while as a villain and he did that. Ant has a chance to be biggest superstar in terms of popularity since Steph. I hope he lives up to that

Luka probably wouldn't have looked the role either. He is 6'7" at best in shoes and doesn't look impressive physically. It was kinda funny the role he did play in the film.
I think Juancho is doing just fine for himself making millions of dollars (looks like his Raptors deal is fully guaranteed) playing basketball and could probably make more playing in Europe if he went there. It's gotta be nice to have a possible 2nd career path lined up though. :)
Here is the reality of Juancho or dozens of other fringy basketball players. They are absolutely terrific basketball players and some are amazing athletic physical freaks. No Juancho isn't a generational athlete compared to some guys but he has plenty of the combination of skills, size, athletic ability etc to portray one on camera.
