Can the 2011 Mavs Win a championship in today times?

Post by Jester1534 »

After looking at both roster the Wolves have essentially assembled the 2011 Mavs team.

Jason Kidd - 8.2 assists, 42.5% Pass%
D'Angelo Russell - 7.1 assists, 37.5% Pass%

The Explosive 2 Guard Scorer

Jason Terry - 15.8 points, 45.1% FG, 36.2% 3P
Anthony Edwards - 21.3 points, 44.1% FG, 35.7% 3P

The Elite 3 Level Scoring Star at the 4

Dirk Nowitzki - 23.0 points, 51.7% FG, 39.3% 3P
Karl-Anthony Towns - 24.6 points, 52.9% FG, 41.0% 3P

The Elite Interior Rim Protector and Rebounder

Tyson Chandler - 9.4 rebounds, 1.1 blocks
Rudy Gobert - 14.7 rebounds, 2.1 blocks

Jaden McDaniels = Shawn Marion

Jmac = JJ Berra

I could go on and on but I think I take this roster over a roster that won a championship.

I would take our roster as well, but can our entire team put up or shut up when things get tight? Dirk nowitzki without a doubt went off on one of the greatest playoff runs ever, but every single one of his teammates played up to their potential that postseason.

Great comparison, jester! And I agree that our roster might be superior, and that Mavs team won 57 games and won a championship. But I also might add that there is one big comparative difference, and therein lies my biggest concern about the upcoming season. My sources tell me that Jason Kidd was a better defender than D'Angelo Russell, even at 37. If DLo can step up and just be an average defender as well as focus on facilitating rather than scoring, this team can be truly special.

But anyway, nice work on the comparison!

It's a different game now over a decade later, and Jaden McDaniels is no matrix yet. But the similarities are there. Gobert is far better than Tyson, Ant is far better than Terry, and KAT is definitely a better defender than Dirk was. But KAT is also stupid. This team will give people trouble.

It's an interesting comparison, but the other factor here is the rest of the league. I think the talent level both on the floor, on coaching staffs, and in front offices is better than ever. That Dallas team would may be make it to the 2nd round of the current Western Conference playoffs and that'd be about it.

Lol hence the question in title :) honestly don't know the answer to the question but either way this season if they stay healthy is going to be fun as hell.

I'll add that Dallas team was just terrific in that postseason. It was the best TEAM that year. I think it's pretty easy to argue they weren't the most talented roster but they just were simply better at playing basketball than other more talented teams. I really enjoyed that title run.

Yeah, add them to the list of ensemble titles: Detroit 1989,1990, and 2004, Dallas 2011, Spurs 2014... Dirk was probably a top 10 or 12 player the year Dallas won, but certainly not in the MVP discussion.

I saw this comparison going around on Twitter and Reddit. I see the similarities only in the frontcourt duos of Dirk Nowitzki and Tyson Chandler, and Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert. Everything else looks like a reach to me. But the main takeaway is that the blueprint is there and that a championship team can be built through the frontcourt regardless of the league going small and/or focusing more on guard play. I've often argued that there is no one way to build a winner. That Dallas Mavericks team is as good of an example as any.

Not sure KAT will ever be able to put together the magical run Dirk had, he sure has no excuses now. Jason Kidd was such a smart player even in the twilight of his career. It would have been really nice if we could have brought in a vet with some championship level (or even multiple conference finals) pedigree. Maybe Lebron signs the vet min with us next year? I dont see that steadying vet force on this team this year, which may cost us a few games in the regular season and eventually could be a factor in us going super deep in the playoffs.
