Most disappointing Rookie thus far

Post by Porckchop »

I'm gonna go with Obi Toppin.
12.7 mins 4.7 pts 2.5 rebs 0.6 assts
Supposedly the most NBA ready prospect coming out of the draft, Obi having a tough time finding minutes for a coach that likes to pile them on.

Obi Toppin would be a good pick if Anthony Edwards wasn't having the season he's having. He's had his highlight reel plays here and there, but the production has been plain bad and he's done nothing to dispel the concerns many had of his game coming out of college. One could argue those concerns have only gotten more serious as it's clear that Edwards isn't altering or improving his game at all.

Toppin is a good choice, Pork. I thought he would have an immediate offensive impact, but he has been terrible. I would argue that Killian Hayes, drafted right before Toppin, has been even worse with his eFG% of 33%. Ant clearly has not been playing like a #1 pick and Wiseman hasn't shown what he can do because of injuries (but overall has been pretty good when he has played). Jalen Smith was picked 10th and can't get off the bench.

Finally Aleksej Pokusevski whom we drafted at 17 but then traded away in the Rubio deal has been a complete disaster. He's averaging 3.3/3.5 in 17 MPG with an absurdly bad eFG% of 30%! I think he would be my pick for most disappointing,

killian Hayes has been the worst. But he's only played 8 games. He's injured.

As the #1 pick, Edwards has been a disappointment in having the biggest impact on his team losing games. But there's been enough promise/flashes for hope.

Toppin has been incredibly meh without the flashes or super young excuse.

Toppin is basically blocked by Randle having the year of his life. Toppin was pretty much a Randle replacement but things took off big time for Randle.

Here's a good answer: Okongwu. There were plenty of people who had no problem just taking Okongwu and pairing him with Towns. He's been awful so far in Atlanta.

Edwards plays pretty much how you would expect a guy to play on a team without coaching and leadership. His talent is genuine, but he doesn't have the benefit of a good culture around him. He simply shouldn't be taking so many bad shots. But it doesn't appear the organization is doing anything to mold him. But it's what we've come to expect around here.

I think with COVID and the short offseason, I am surprised there arent more disappointments. Edwards' talent surpasses what I had anticipated for him. Would be a shame if he cant become an impact player. I think its safe to assume, like Cool said, that he doesnt have the infrastructure to meet his full potential.

Not so sure about that, WW. Some Atlanta fans are quite happy with what they have seen and not happy that Pierce wasn't playing him (after he returned from his injury). He's not doing much on offense (although he is making 58% of his shots), but he is rebounding very well, and flashing the defensive monster potential he showed in college. He's been ok, but I think he's really going to flourish under McMillan. He had 6 points (on 3-3 shooting) and 3 rebounds in only 10 minutes in his first game with the new coach, and completely shut down Precious Achiuwa when he was matched up against him.

Anthony was the first pick in a poor class. We knew scoring was his forte. While it's been inefficient at best he stil has the highest scoring avg (of all rooks)on the worst team in the league. It's hard to see him as the biggest disappointment. With better play around him should come easier opportunities. I know that contradicts my feelings on Towns but I expect more from a player that I thought had close to generational talent.

I agree he is not the biggest disappointment. However efficiency is the name of the game. Score more points then your opponent. You won't do that often when you shoot the ball poorly like many of the Wolves players do. Either that or they play poor defense. Ant is also getting opportunities very few rookies do considering how poorly he has shot the ball because of injuries and lack of other talent on the roster.

Ant has shown lots of skill to get a shot off and get to the rim he however is struggling massively in making the shots and drawing fouls.

I looked through a number of players who ended up being All Stars and not one started as a rookie as poorly as Ant has. So I think with history as a indicator, he has a slim chance of becoming a great player. He will probably end up being an avg starter.
