Salary Cap moves.....

Post by Hicks123 [enjin:6700838] »

There is a lot of talk about teams that simply want to "dump" guys to better their cap numbers. Any interest in working deal?

Have heard following guys:
Adams
Schroeder
Capela
Paul
Hayward
Whiteside
Love
Batum

The name that sparked interest from me was Adams. It's not that I think he is the best player in the world, but he adds a level of toughness this team would benefit from. And unlike guys like Whiteside (who could be had for free), he seems like a great team guy. That team needs to shed salary desperately.

The guy I think that helps the Wolves a ton, and would likely be available, is Favors. Strong defender, who has never really fit with Gobert. They have talked about moving him for years. He fits much better alongside a player like Towns who isn't always anchored in the paint.

Interesting thread.

On the Zach Lowe podcast they said the Suns are looking to basically give Josh Jackson away.

Unfortunately, the Wolves are not a team that help another team improve their cap situation

I would trade them even up Wiggins for Whiteside and maybe even Love, his game will age well I think and would be a better stretch 4 (on offense) and on defense would be a great rebounder and fast break initiator.

That isnt dumping them though - it would be one overpriced player for another - ours is just younger and not a locker room issue - oh - he is never hurt either.

Sign me in on Adams. He'd bring a whole country and 4 mil fans over with him too :)

However I just can't see a suitable deal for both teams without involving a third team.

Unfortunately, you are right Tim. I do wonder whether Pat Riley would deal Whiteside for Wiggins straight up. Miami would get the better more durable player, albeit overpriced. The Wolves would get cap relief after next season.

There had been a report of Miami having some interest in Wiggins. Miami is also looking to improve their luxury tax situation. So here is something that gives them 13+ mil of relief while at the same time restructuring the Wolves roster:

Wiggins and Teague for Whiteside, Dragic and Waiters.

We get one year of Whiteside's inside presence, but rid ourselves of 4 more years of Wiggins' salary burden. The Teague/Dragic swap makes the deal big enough so that Waiters can be included, giving Miami some significant luxury tax relief. But we wouldn't have much luxury tax space to tweak the roster further, unless Glen were willing to pay the luxury tax for a year... Heck, we might still be able to pursue D'lo with Dragic being traded into a 3rd team's cap space to make it work!

I don't think there is anything too significant to read into it but in his podcast with Brit Robson Jon K did rattle off some sort of meh trades for Wiggins and a Wiggins for Whiteside was one of them. I think it was more of saying stuff that would work salary wise (mentioned Wolves would have to take back a guy like James Johnson before mentioning Whiteside) but honestly if that was on the table as a guy with still some hope for Wiggins I would be seriously considering that if It was offered. I wouldn't be shocked if the Heat would actually consider it. I think I'd be willing to take back another one of those bad contracts that go for one more year (james Johnson, Waiters etc) if it meant not having to give up anything else if I was really ready to move on from Wiggins.

Monster - My thinking on Wiggins is similar to yours. I really want to believe there is still hope for Wiggins, but deep down and know it's probably time to move him if we can get a somewhat decent deal. I would not be willing to move Okogie, Culver, KDB, Covington or any future first round picks to move him. But I would be willing to take on Waiters or Johnson from Miami. Ideally, we could do a straight swap of Wiggins for Whiteside.

The problem with those deals and Jon K points out is...they don't give you room for the smoldering hype of adding Russell! Now Whiteside is a 1 year deal you could stretch him I suppose which if it meant you get ultimately Russell...sure do it. Heck if the Wolves were really serious about Russell and willing to dig into Glen's pockets for a couple years instead of giving up assets how close could they get trading Wiggins for Whiteside and stretching him and Teague? Those 2 guys would combine for about 46 million in salary and I believe it would be stretched over 3 years so they would have saved 30 million in salary this year. Bingo! I'd guess they could find a way to move Teague with assets to make it worth not stretching him but Whiteside yeah. Plus you never know maybe one of those guys takes a buyout that lowers that number a bit. I mentioned that about Teague before. He could take a 5 million dollar less buyout if he knows he is gonna get a deal for say even 7 million on the open market. If they stretched him then he would count less than 5 million this year. I doubt he gives up that much but...still.

Another option is say the Wolves trade Teague to a team who sends back a guy they don't want with 1 year left making let's say 7 million. They could stretch that guy or maybe trade that guy to someone who would take them on for a low cost of a 2nd rounder. They could even stretch Dieng although obviously doubtful they would want to do that. Good grief I need to go to bed I am starting to believe this Russell thing is sort of possible. lol
