Kelan Martin

Post by kekgeek »

What are the wolves going to do with him. He is more than half way done with his 45 days of NBA service on his 2-way contract. According to Dane Moore he is not practicing with the team so they can save some days of service.

Will the wolves give him a cheap contract like Naz and Nowell?

Who will be cut?

Is Martin worth cutting a guy and signing to a longer deal?

Just an semi interesting spot for the wolves

An intelligent front office in this scenario would make a one-for-none, two-for-one, or three-for-two trade -- or something along those lines -- that would open up a roster spot or two. Kelan Martin's not a special player by any means, but he's worth hanging on to and seeing what the progression looks like. I think he'll get a deal similar to what Cameron Reynolds got last year; a deal that guaranteed him the rest of the season as well as a team option for the following year.

I personally think Kelan would struggle to make a roster spot on a team that was actually good, however, we need to throw as many darts as we can and see if one of these days we hit a bullseye. I've been impressed with his hustle, that's for sure, but ultimately the reason he's earning a paycheck is to make shots and unfortunately he doesn't make enough of them yet.

Yes. When you're trying to hit an under-the-radar target you need to take a lot of shots. I see more in Martin that hustle, although his hustle alone counts a lot. I see a guy with a nice-looking shot who hit 50% of his twos and 35% of his threes in college. I see a guy with terrific size and strength for his position and a knack for rebounding. He's also shown good quickness and a nice handle. So I see him as more than a random target under the radar. I see in Martin the potential of a solid rotation player and perhaps even more.

Martin, Reid and Nowell are the three guys I want to see a lot more of with the Wolves this season. And call me crazy, but I'm pretty high on McLaughlin.

Meanwhile, KBD continues to impress, although he's been quite streaky this season. I think he's getting just about the right amount of playing time.

I think we know what we have in Culver and Okogie. Both of those guys can be very good in similar ways, but both absolutely have to significantly improve their perimeter shooting to end up as more than just solid rotation players. They are both getting enough playing time. If they improve their shooting, it will happen in the gym early morning and late night with good coaching and repetition.

Guys like Martin, Reid and Nowell need more playing time at the NBA level to get better of their potential and for them to develop and adjust to the NBA-level game. Unlike Culver and Okogie, Nowell already proved in college that he's a shooter. He needs time to adjust to the speed and size of the NBA and to develop confidence at that level. I think the organization has made a mistake by not giving him substantially more minutes with Wiggins and Teague out. I see this stretch as a missed opportunity for the Wolves to better evaluate and develop Nowell as one of the few natural shooters on a team woefully short on shooting.

Lip, Unfortunately Martin's college body of work is becoming less and less relevant in trying to forecast his future potential. He's now 24 years old and played a full season in Europe last year for a German club, where he hit 31% of his 3's. He's also had a lot of time down in Iowa this year where he has hit.....31% of his 3s....again. With the better defense in the NBA his shooting has been even worse with the Wolves. It's just not good enough for ultimately what we need and his age and post-collegiate shooting numbers just don't give me much reason to hope for better.

Nowell is much younger and has actually proven he can hit the NBA 3 consistently in the G League, unlike Martin. Hopefully he eventually finds his touch in the real NBA, so I agree he is someone we should look forward to watching. Same with Reid.

Martin must be doing something the organization and coaching staff values more than other guys. The only other of the guys that have spent time in the G-league this year that has moved ahead of him is KBD and Earlier in the year Martin was getting minutes before him. I think this is an interesting development because clearly Martin wasn't the top of their list a few months ago...for summer league as he came off the bench...for a 2-way contract...it took a quite a while before they finally signed him and Wolfson reported Martin was basically jumping at the idea of a 2-way deal. Personally I think Cam Reynolds in his limited actuation looked more like a useful guy than Martin because he was more of a guy that just spotted up and played some decent looking D. Martin has much more scoring prowess but he hasn't exactly shown that in his shooting percentages at the pro level. Of course Reynolds G-league stays this year are fairly underwhelming. I just looked at Martin's G-league stats and he is up to .355 from 3 in Iowa so that's not too bad.

As for what they do with him? Honestly I have t seen anything to make me feel like they need to sign him to a regular NBA deal. Reminder that the last few games of the season the g-league season is over so he could play in those games. If the Wolves wanted to clear a roster spot to sign him I'm sure they could just cut someone but I'd guess they would be able to trade someone at some point also. Ideally Nowell is ready and gets some of those minutes Martin has been getting. I kinda want to see McLaughlin get some minutes. Having guys on a 2-way deal is a good way to keep them around. They are basically locked to your roster for another year if you want them.
