Potential Trade Partners

Post by Lipoli390 »

We've talked about possible PG trade targets like Russell, Holiday and others. Another important angle is to identify those teams that might have an interest in a trade with the Wolves. I'm assuming the Wolves would want a fairly young high upside player future picks (or both) in a deal. My assumption is based on things Rosas has said about building forget future around KAT, including the need to assemble a roster of players around Towns age.

I see three categories of teams that would appear to be more viable as trade partners for the Wolves.

One category consists of teams that are certain to make the playoffs and want to enhance their chances of advancing in the playoffs and possibly compete for a championship this season. These teams include Miami, Toronto, Boston, Indiana and Philadelphia in the East along with Denver, Utah, Dallas, the Clippers and Houston in the West. Some teams, in this category would likely have a strong interest in acquiring Covington. They might also have an interest in Layman, Bell or Vonleh.

A second category consists of teams that are competing just to get into the playoffs with a 7th or 8the seed. These teams include Orlando, Brooklyn, Detroit and possibly Chicagoland Charlotte in the East. In the West, it's every team except Golden State,.

The final category consists of those team that are so bad they're ready to blow it up right now and start accumulating assets now that they can use to begin rebuilding. I'd put the Wizards at the head of this list, which would also include the Knicks. Perhaps the Wizards are ready to move on from Beal. Would they swap him for Wiggins? I doubt it, but I'd give it a shot of I were Rosas. Perhaps Covington could be packaged in a deal for Beal.

In any event, these are the most likely trade partners, assuming they have something we'd like.

Timeline has become one of the trigger words I'm sick of hearing from this organization.

I'm OK with this tag line if it simply means the Wolves front office is exercising patience as they attempt to retool around KAT. Better to wait for a good deal than rush into a bad one. However, this team should be aggressively pursuing deals to bring in draft assets for use next June. The February trade deadline provides a unique opportunity for the Wolves to lay the groundwork for trying to get the other elite player this teams needs next summer. Teague should have been dealt for picks, not a 27-year old journeyman. Wiggins and Covington should be shopped aggressively - with Bell, Napier and Vonleh as possible additional inducements. Dieng's play with KAT out might have given him some marginally positive trade value now that he closes in on the last year of his contract.

In other words, the Wolves should be in full tank mode and have their eye on Tyrese Halliburton or a draft-day deal for Beal or Booker next summer. They should be loading up on assets that can potentially help them make moves next June - trading up or trading out. You can't go half-in on a strategy. You're either doing everything you can to set the table for acquiring the 2nd elite player you need or you might as well do nothing.

At this point I make a Godfather offer to the Wizards for Beal. It's our best shot to get a star. If that means us taking Wall too I do that even. I know Glen won't pay the luxury tax, but doing insane things is the only way we have a punchers chance to save this team from moving.

YES.

But what on Earth do the Wolves have to offer to make such a trade feasible... other than Towns?

[Note: I don't think we have to worry about the team moving... but I guess you never know after Taylor sells. And those new fans of the new Las Vegas Blue Chips franchise, and those Coast Elite NBA pundits screaming "the fans didn't support them anyway" ... are gonna deserve a punch in the mouth.]

Draft picks (particularly this year since we're tanking) and prayers that they like one of our young prospects.

So we're hoping another team is in for a Promise of Hope caravan? A chance to take a bunch of swings in the draft with the hopes that someday, maybe, possibly... they'll hit on one who's as good as Bradley Beal.

Cool.

It all depends if Beal wants out. At least make the offer.
