Possible Covington Trade Deadline Deals

Post by Lipoli390 »

I'm one of those who thinks this team needs to trade Covington. While I think there will be more and better options available next June in connection with draft, I remain concerned about his health and I suspect there might be some good Covington deals available to the Wolves by the February deadline. This thread is intended to solicit ideas for discussion.

One possibility I see would be Covington to the Sixers for Mike Scott, Zhaire Smith and the 2020 2nd round picks of the Hawks and Knicks.

Why would this make sense for the Wolves? I see the following three reasons this deal would make sense for the Wolves.

1. It would save the Wolves around $4 million against the cap next season and provide further cap relief the next season with the end of Mike Scott's contract.

2. It would bring in a very talented young SG who I think is better than Culver or Okogie. It would be part of the continuing effort to find that young gem who can develop into an all-star wing to pair with KAT.

3. It would give the Wolves two very high second round picks, which will have significant value for trade purposes or possible picks next June

Why would the Sixers do it? I see the following reasons:

1. First and foremost, Covington would provide the Sixers with a legitimate 6th man off the bench. Right now the Sixers have a really impressive starting five with Simmons, Richardson, Harris, Horford and Embiid. But after those five, they don't have a legitimate 6th man who can defend and score. Covington would be that guy for them.

2. Covington was a fan favorite in Philly and his return would provide some extra excitement to the fan base and probably to his old teammates who really liked him

No thank you on that deal. We don't need another non shooter. Also why do you think Smith is any good. He is a G leaguer currently and can't even crack the bench of a really thin 76ers team.

If that is what we are getting back for Cov might as well keep Cov

This was a good lead into a thread that definitely needed to be made, but I think we can get more than that, Lip.

I'm interested in seeing some ideas from you and others on this Board who realize, as I do, that this organization needs to seriously consider trading Covington.

I'm not crazy about the potential deal I suggested. It's just a deal I'm sure the Sixers would do and I like the potential of Smith as well as getting two top 4 second rounders. I like the idea of having those two second round picks along with our own 2020 lottery pick, our own top 12 second rounder, Culver and Okogie as trade assets next June. Also, note that Smith hit 37.5% of his threes last season with the Sixers, granted it was on a small 2.7 attempts and limited number of games. Further, he's a phenomenal athlete and excellent ball-handler for a SG who I was really impressed with up close in Summer League.

Finding a deal by the Feb. deadline to bring in young high-upside talent will be difficult for at least a couple reasons:

1. The only teams that would be interested in Covington would be contending teams that have a need for a players like Covington, which limits the number of potential suitors for RoCo.

2. The Wolves and nearly every contending team are over the cap, which means salaries will have to match, further limiting the scope of options.

Totally agree that we need to trade Covington. Don't know much about Smith, but I hope we could do better than that. My 1st phone call would be Denver. I would try to get Morris and Beasley In return. Denver is crowded with solid rotation players and so would likely do a 2 for 1 to get a guy that fits better between with Jokic and Murray. Good fit next to Jokic for the same reasons he's a good fit next to towns if we were competitive (aka had a stud guard to go with them). I like the potential of those two guards, especially Morris and think this would be pretty even value.

I think Covington's deal opens up a lot more potential suitors. If Zaire Smith is the best we can do so be it. But I'd think the top 6 teams in both conferences could be options. His contract is perfect relative to his age.

Also, Covington would be a great fit for Portland. They have two excellent point/combo guards (smaller) and good depth up front when healthy. What they're missing is a good 3 and D forward. The question is what would you want from them? Simons would have to be coming back, but I'd want a bit more. Adding Collins would be too much, but maybe a top 20 protected first to go with Simons?

Sounds like Horford is unhappy with his role in Philly. Does he make any sense here?

Interesting. That's exactly what we're missing!

Lip, Why on earth would we get rid of Covnigton to get a prospect equivalent or worse than one we already have. Go look at Zhaire Smith's G-league stats versus Jaylen Nowell and you will quickly realize that we already have that player type, except not as undersized!

You guys are all nuts (well, I guess we all are by definition since we follow the Wolves :) .)
