Nice find Bloop. I have a lot of hope for that kid.

I do too, CB44. Let's not forget...just a little over a year ago he was the 7th ranked prospect in the country coming out of HS. I didn't immediately love the pick at the time because of his unimpressive year in college, but it's not difficult to spot his athletic ability and ballhandling skills.
Q mentioned this in another thread, but I'll take it a little further. Rosas is fond of trying to steal guys who were top players in HS but underperformed in college. Reid (18th in his class), Vando (12th) McDaniel (7th) and even Ant (2nd) to some extent fit this mold. Now it's up to the coaching staff to bring out what their college coaches could not. So far, I would say that Reid, Vando and McDaniel are all performing better than what was expected coming out of their freshman years.
We already have two max players. I believe Rosas's strategy is swinging for the fences and hoping that 2 or 3 of the 4 guys in the previous paragraph can become the player they were in HS. If so, this team can be very good. Sprinkle in a shooter like Beasley, facilitators like Rubio/J-Mac, and defensive-minded role players like Culver and Okogie, and you can see (maybe by squinting a little) why Rosas might be more optimistic about this roster than the consensus here.

Shabazz Muhammad was the top-ranked high school recruit as well. I'm not saying that pedigree doesn't matter because I personally think it does, but it's a dangerous thing to fall in love with for sure.

Wasn't culver like the 300th best hs prospect though? :) he was exactly the opposite of all these other guys. But I do get what you're saying... I like the home run swings too. Culver is looking like a 3 pitch strikeout though right now and I'm really not getting the euro pick this year

Re: Jaden's defensive impact
The defensive numbers for McDaniels definitely look encouraging and he appears to have a decent stroke. Typically it's against the Law of Natural Order for the Wolves to have someone that can defend and make 3's.
Like Vando, he's become a bit less efficient and a bit less productive as he plays against higher caliber players versus garbage time, but he's super young and you can see the long-term upside. Can he fulfill it though?

I've thought for a while now that if we're ever good, Culver and/or Okogie are at the end of the bench or playing elsewhere. You can't have two defensive specialists that shoot less than 30% from 3 playing 50% or more of the available wing minutes.
Besides Rubio, I'd say Culver and Okogie have been the biggest disappointments. After a college career where he made 66 3's at a 38% clip and made nearly 80% of his free throws, Okogie has only gotten worse and worse as a shooter. He's shooting effing 17% from 3 right now. How is that even possible?
And Culver is on a similar course. I'd call him an "adequate" 3-point shooter in college who is now showing in his second season after an entire Covid offseason to work on his shot that - yep! - got worse, not better.
This simply does not happen to other franchises.

Yep, I agree Camden. It's a gamble for sure, because you would think the year in college was more important than the high school stardom. It's why I was concerned about going with Wiseman at #1, even though he was dominant in HS. But so far Reid is exceeding his college performance...to your point, largely because he got himself in shape. And Vando and Macdaniel are at least flashing some potential. It's a tall order, but much of the success of this franchise is dependent on the coaching staff fully bringing out the latent talent we know these guys have.

Ha, great point! Culver was not highly regarded in HS, but looked (to me, at least) quite NBA ready in his freshman year. But the NBA has been too much for him so far, and he is striking out. I'm not giving up, but he clearly has a ways to go to match the way he was playing at A&M.

What do you think of McDaniels so far?
