Wolves Open Roster Spot

Post by Lipoli390 »

I'm still dumbfounded by Gersson's decision to leave a roster spot open. This team was clearly lacking front court depth and size before they released RHJ. Then the Wolves' best player and starting center, KAT, went down with an injury and still no action to fill the open roster spot with another big. It's not as if there are no proven NBA bigs available. Dwayne Dedmon and Kyle O'Qunn are two options. And if they're too big for Rosas, the smaller RHJ is still available. Now it looks like the Nets will likely sign a couple free agent bigs, maybe even RHJ.

So it sounds like teams might be able to add another 2-way contract player. I'm wondering if the Wolves will even do that because of the lux tax.

I think the Wolves have about $3-5M room under the luxury tax threhold. So they can certainly afford to fill the open roster spot at the vet minimum or slightly higher and also add another 2-way player. I like the idea of adding another 2-way and I can see Rosas doing that, but it won't be the caliber player who we can expect to help this season. Guys like Dwayne Dedmon, Kyle O'Quinn and RHJ, who might be able to help us this season, won't sign with us on a 2-way deal.

So we need to make use of our remaining roster spot and luxury tax room to add a decent NBA-proven big to the roster. Unfortunately, that seems unlikely. Apparently, Rosas is holding the spot open for some unknown possible trade that could include more incoming than out-going players or more salary coming back that could push up close to the luxury tax threshold. That "strategy" seemed misplaced before KAT was hurt and it became downright idiotic after he was hurt, especially given how much this team has struggled on the boards and defensively inside this season. I'll add that a team that finished with the 3rd worst record in the League last season shouldn't be this close to the luxury tax threshold to begin with. Juancho' s contract alone puts the team several million close to the luxury tax threshold than it needs to be given the other available free agent bigs who are performing better than Juancho and paid significantly less.

Is it possible that we are missing something with RHJ? Is it possible that there's a story here we aren't privy to?

short answer: it'll go to JMac after the deadline.

long answer: Rosas' #1 goal for this team, even more than actually winning, is setting himself up for a trade that will never come. He's selling a dream that only he, Ryan and Glen believe in. Even in terms of stars, it's Bradley Beal, maybe Zach LaVine, and then the vultures are gonna circle around KAT if they haven't already. If the idea is to go star hunting and keep yourself open for that opportunity, Rosas has to come to the conclusion that the window has shut already. Just focus on Edwards, Culver, JMac, Reid, Vanderbilt, McDaniels, etc to become functional NBA players. That's it. I can't convince Rihanna to sleep with me because I have $20 in my hand. Meanwhile, Rosas expects to land a superstar with the $20 he calls a Wolves roster.
