MVP at mid season
I was just reading an opinion piece on mid-season awards. LeBron was the pick of the majority of the panel. Question #1 how can you be the league MVP when your team is under performing? Question #2 another vote getter was Durant - how can a player on a team as deep with MVP caliber players be THE MVP? Question #3 is the MVP award a measure of being the best player in the league or the player that has the biggest impact on the success of a successful team?

The Durant answer is simple. He's playing elite on both ends. He's top 5 in scoring and blocks. 26/7/5 on 51/41/89 and top 5 in blocks from a natural 3. It doesn't matter who your teammates are at that point. Who else on the list is putting up those numbers on both ends of the floor?

So you are saying MVP is the best player? FYI only one of six on SI picked Durant. The rest James

I was just responding to your questioning why Durant would be on the list at all. He's having a hell of a season. The problem with MVP is it differs almost every year. Last year even broke the mold that you would normally have to be on a good team to get it. Who the hell knows who's gonna get it this year? LeBron certainly doesn't deserve it based on how his team has played, but they might give him a pity one since nobody else has really stepped up to get it outside of Durant who's gonna get knocked for being on a stacked team. The Bucks aren't good enough for Giannis to get it Imo. Harden had been racking up missed games. If he misses any time in the second half that will probably cost him. It's the most open I've seen it in a while.

A couple thoughts reading this thread.
Cleveland is underachieving I guess but that team has played most of its games without both of its starting PGs, TT missed a bunch of games and they have a bunch of new faces. LeBron is having one of the best seasons of his career. He is absolutely deserving of MVP. That team without him? Yikes
Durant is averaging a nice bunch of blocks but some people think his defense has been overrated by some because of that stat. Durant's defense overall is obviously an asset to him as a player and to his team. As long as he keeps up his all around ability he is gonna be in the MVP conversation every year.
There is still a lot of basketball to be played and like it's been said If Harden misses too many games that could take him out of it. It will be interesting to see where the Wolves and Butler end up this season. If both keep trending positively he will get some votes.

Re: MVP at mid season
If Harden remains healthy the rest of the way and continues to play at the level he was playing at before his hamstring injury, then he'd easily be my pick for MVP. Harden is the best player on the League's second-best player. And no one, not even Durant, has been playing at the higher level. Durant may be the most talented player on the Warriors and his numbers are tremendous. But I still consider Curry the Warriors' most important player. I have to admit that my view is colored by the fact that I can't stand Durant for what I consider to be his gutless move from the Thunder to what was at the time already the best team in the League. So I can see the case for Durant as MVP. But if I had a vote, he'd never get my vote.
