Obviously we need to wait for details, but an indictment for "reckless or negligent injury to a child" does not sound good at all. Has the NFL ever had a worse week? And if the charges are true, Peterson's indictment couldn't happen at a worse time for him, as the league is not going to be inclined toward underreacting after the Rice fiasco. If a player got a lifetime suspension for harming a woman who later married him, what can Peterson expect if he indeed did harm a defenseless child?
By far the most important concern here is that the child is all right, and I am hoping for some clarity and good news there. But the secondary issues are what happens to Peterson, and how the Vikings should react to this. It seemed peculiar when he missed practice yesterday for personal reasons, and now we know the reason for his absence. We are still innocent until proven guilty in this country, but I still wonder if the Vikings should sit Peterson until more details come out. Maybe this turns out to be a Dante Cunningham incident, and the player is eventually cleared. But considering a child is involved here, the Vikings need to get out ahead of this situation.

Here are the photos of AP's 4-year-old after his whipping, which AP has admitted to. It's sad, but according to reports, AP thinks this is okay. As I said before, the Vikings need to act quickly here. Based on the news that is out already, including confirming comments from AP, they need to suspend him for this week's game as they continue to research this.

Long, Dante Cunningham wasn't cleared. They didn't have enough evidence to take it to trial, which usually means he made a deal with the GF ($).
Taking a switch to a 4 year old is absolutely pathetic. The guy should get jail time for this along with thirty minutes of being tied up and the boy given the switch. I wonder why this took so long to prosecute if AP admitted to doing it.

Re: Peterson indicted
This is depressing on so many levels.
I wish there were more support for parents. You have to take classes to legally have a gun or a vehicle etc, but not for a little human being. I'm not saying anything mandatory, but its almost insane how little support there is for parents who likely desperately need it. I absolutely don't have the answers and IDK if anything would have helped this situation, but AP didn't exactly have a great situation growing up either right? Not making excuses just saying I wish something more preventative was in place instead of a system thats basically reactionary. What AP did is awful and he doesn't think what he did is wrong except it happened to get a little worse this time. Ugh.
AP is going to get punished pretty severely at the very least by the league for this and the other instances of "whooping" considering everything that has happened in the last few months.

Re: Peterson indicted
Monster, you make some excellent points. I am really angry with AP, but I do think there is room for compassion for him too. I don't know much about his youth, but I do know that he watched his older brother get shot and that his father went to prison for laundering crack money. And he must have been raised with some unusual values if he doesn't understand it is flat out wrong to hit a child with a stick. I do feel compassion for AP, but I also want him gone. I am a long-time Viking fan, but I can't see myself cheering for a team that would condone AP's behavior. I see no other option for the Vikings other than to give him his outright release.
Sjm. thanks for the clarification on the Dante Cunningham situation. I suspect you are probably correct, that a little cash under the table made that problem go away.

Re: Peterson indicted
While I don't agree with taking an object and hitting your child with it, personally the switch isn't an issue for me. I don't judge parents who spank their kids whether with their hand, belt, switch, etc. My issue is when there are long lasting marks or it breaks skin like it did in this instance. We definitely have to remember where he grew up and how he was punished himself as a kid. I'm pretty sure getting spanked with a switch/paddle/belt is still very prevalent in the south and his mom even came out admitting he was whipped as a kid. These are important factors. Lets also not forget that Peterson never admitted these pics were his son. He admitted to the previous grand jury that he physically reprimanded his child.
Also, I think it's misconstrued to say Peterson thinks he did no wrong. He sought counseling for ways to be a better parent & disciplinarian specifically ways to reprimand w/o spanking, etc. To me that doesn't sound like a guy who thinks he did no wrong.
This is the second time he's been indicted for this SAME incident too. It was kept out of the public eye the first time, but now some asshole leaked pics of a child. If Peterson loses his job, what about all the millions of parents who do or have done similar things to their kids, should they all lose their job or be put in jail? This was pretty common in previous generations too. Again I don't condone it, but isn't it interesting how society is having more problems with kids now during a time when even spanking your child has huge negative stigma?
