If you could do one - which one?

Post by Carlos Danger »

Nothing really new to discuss, but I am curious to see how spit (if at all) this board is assuming each of these options would be possible:

What I've said the entire time. Don't get cute, draft Towns and then celebrate.

Keep the pick.

I've noticed this board has become almost 100% Towns (except Bleed who is driving the Russel hype train) and it seems people are getting really down on Okafor. Both of these guys are going to be REALLY good (am I crazy to say both are going to be multiple time all-stars?). Be prepared to accept Okafor because that is who I think Flip is going to draft and don't worry it won't be a bad thing, I don't think it is going to ruin the re-re-re-rebuild and I don't think us fans will be cursing the selection for the next ten years.

[ Abe Style Note: I'm not saying that Okafor will be better than Towns or that it is even the right pick. I'm just trying to stymie the hysteria that will break loose if (when) the Wolves take Okafor #1 overall]

I know Flip's gonna draft Okafor. His mind is made up as we speak (type) and it's not going to change in one month's time. Both Towns and Okafor are going to be very good players, All-Stars more than likely, but I believe Towns is going to have such a bigger impact on winning basketball, which is the entire purpose of playing the game anyway.

I've accepted this, but I'm still hoping that something changes. We've been asking for a player like Towns since... I won't get into all that. Ugh, oh well. Flip's not gonna flip. He's gonna take his guy.

I actually haven't voted yet on my own poll. I'm still on the fence. I think a very good case could be made for all of the choices:

1.) Keeping the pick. Advantage - you get your 1st choice. Disadvantage - you have more risk (see Anthony Bennett)

2.) Trading Down: Advantage: You spread your risk and could still end up with top player (see 2013 when we flipped our pick into Bazz and Dieng) Disadvantage - could miss out on star

3.) Trade for Established All Star. Advantage: Low risk. You immediately fill a hole with an All Star. Also, one less young/unproven guy on team. Disadvantage - might miss on "home run" talent.

Alright board. Convince me!

I took your option 3 literally and voted for it. As I understand the option, we have the ability to trade the number one pick for any player not named LeBron. I love Karl Towns and believe he is going to be an all-star player, but we all know there is some risk in projecting a college player to the NBA. So, I'm trading the pick for Anthony Davis, a player that we already know is great and fills an immediate need.

C Pek
PF Davis
SF Wiggins
SG Martin
PG Rubio

That's arguably the best starting five in the league, with Rubio feeding 4 guys capable of going off for 20 on any given night. And with KG, Shabazz, LaVine, Dieng on the bench, we are challenging for an NBA title within 2 years if we stay healthy.

Now obviously the Pelicans don't make that deal, but the poll didn't exclude anyone other than LBJ. If Anthony Davis is taken off the table, I would vote to keep the pick.

Someone care to enlighten me on what established All-Star is available AND young enough to make it worthwhile?

I was sure this thread was going to be about the Olsen twins.

I meant it as open. Obviously nobody knows who will or won't be available. I think it's safe to assume their very top tier guys like LeBron and Anthony Davis would not be and that's what I meant by "not LeBron great". But maybe Demarcus Cousins type good.

"Ginger or Maryann?" would also have been acceptable. :-)
