have fans overvalued the talent of...

Post by Porckchop »

The threesome that is Martin, Pek and Rubio? I mean fans were thinking this was a .500 ball club based on these guys abilities. Are U starting to realize that these guys are serviceable players but no where near the cornerstones once thought to be? How much worse would this team be without any of them? The difference between winning 15 games and 8 means nothing to me .
I see alot of debate on here about the additions and subtractions this team has made this year and how it's hurting the team. But the fact is all these moves have to do with mostly marginal players . Players that don't make biggest difference between winning and losing . This team sucks becuz all its "best" players are either not that good or aren't reaching their potential. Shouldn't that be the biggest concern instead of being upset about losing late round picks for contributors?

I dont over rate Rubio. He is as good as Connelly for the Grizz, a distributing point guard who is a good defender. If they had Ricky they would be a better team. Pek has chronic injury issues, apparently. KMart is an add on who can score. The question is, can Ricky and Lavine become the splash brothers in the back court, with Wiggins' help? Then Flip has accomplished something since being here.

Then we have something to build on. WHY ISNT FLIP being called out more? Team defense is a joke.

Doesn't Conley avg over 16 pts a game? He also gives Rubio fits when they play each other . I wouldn't say Ricky is on his level. IMO
And again, that goes back to my point. We keep making excuses for these guys. I don't care about injuries . A guys only as good as his ability to stay on the court. Can u think of one player that Ricky has made better by playing with him? Not on a play by play basis but overall. Who's better becuz they play with him?

Pork, Mikkeman (and me to a lesser degree) have written exhaustive posts detailing how the team consistently plays better when Rubio is on the court versus sitting on the bench. The "Rubio Effect" is significant.

That being said, I don't think anyone here believes that the trio of Rubio, Martin, and Pekovic are the franchise cornerstones. I think most of us believe it's likely Rubio, Wiggins, and one or two players yet to be determined - they may not even be on the roster yet. Martin and Pekovic are here as a bridge to keep us competitive as we hopefully identify and develop young talent. Of course that bridge sort of collapsed as all three of these guys went down early in the season.....

They may play a Lil better, but the team still loses and I can't think of one player that's having a good year. Except for Shabbaz . Isnt the pg supposed to make players around him better? Who's gotten better?

Well said.

On a playoff team Martin is a role player who can score. He is used as our primary offensive option. He doesn't bring much defense.

Pek has disappointed. I think we need to find an upgrade at C.

Rubio will never shoot great. Neither did Jason Kidd. Rubio probably will never be a superstar, but he can definitely be a great piece on a winning team. He is a facilitator. He needs better guys to facilitate to.

Ricky can't literally develop players. Are you serious with that statement? There is no question that everyone just plays better with Ricky on the court. The offense runs better and the defense gets an upgrade at the point of attack so teams can't just get past our other matador defenders.

The effect of a point guard is on a team level IMO, IE, the Clips are better with Paul playing, we are demonstrably better with Ricky playing. Young players, I think the question is, who has Flip made better? Dieng for instance - whats up with his regression? My problem is with coaching, not Ricky

Ricky can't stay in front of a point guard to save his life. Speaking of matadors. He's an opportunistic defender with quick hands but he can't stay in front of anyone.
