Four Pointer?

Post by Carlos Danger »

Kind of a weird story. Our own KMart gets a mention when comparing guys taking contested jumpers:

Dunks and 3 pointers, that's what the league wants and that's what it's getting. But do the fans want that? Crusty fans like us like to see a real offense but casual fans don't care as much. 4 pointers are ridiculous right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens eventually

Nothing would shock me. I wasn't a fan back then, but I'm sure many thought the 3 point shot was a gimmick back when it was proposed. I guess if you are going to put in a 4 point line, then you might as well make anything over half court worth 5 - right? :-)

Or how about you lose a point if you make a shot whilst jumping into the defender to try and draw a foul?

The advanced metrics on a 4 pointer would be annoying. We typically see at least 1/3 3 point shots go in (league average is usually slightly higher at 36%) and that's all you need to make it a shot that's worth it. A 4 point shot would only have to go in 1/4 to be worth it from an advanced stats perspective and it's not entertaining to watch 3/4 shots miss. There would be a couple guys like Curry who could make it interesting and make more than 1/4 of the attempts, but overall it just adds more chucking and you can be even less efficient with a 4 point shot and have it still be worth it. I think the game is right where it needs to be from an entertainment perspective.

It's sort of a weird article and interesting. To me the idea of a 4 point shot has been kicked around by fans but I don't think anyone has taken it seriously. It seems like a gimmick to me. I used to tell people while watching various games there was a 5 point shot in my college gym few people knew about. You had to stand in the one spot were various lines from the basketball volleyball and other sports connected and take the shot and if you made it it was worth 5 points. It always amazed me how many people believed my joke.

I had a couple friends in college that you had to guard once they crossed the half court line. I never charted their attempts well beyond the college 3 point line but those guys could make that shot enough you wanted to contest them out there and if you didn't they would make you pay and look stupid. One of those guys is now a doctor and the other drives a bus. Maybe the bus driver should get an agent if there is a 4 point shot added. Lol Hollywood Robinson might also attempt to make a comeback.

I agree. Even watching these pre-season games agains OKC, Chicago, and Toronto....Teams are moving the ball quickly, bigs are scoring inside and out, everyone seems to make the extra pass. I think the game in terms of talent, aesthetic appeal, and overall entertainment is at an all-time high right now.

A four-point line would be the worst thing the NBA could implement. Leave the league as it is and let it thrive.

The league has improved a bit in eliminating some of the shenanigan fouls that used to be called, but there are still some issues. I wish they could find a way to ban the Harden arm-bar move, but that would be a tough one to differentiate from legitimate fouls.

Yeah that would be terrible. Hopefully they never screw with that. People can go watch the Globetrotters if they want to see that lol
