Backup Point Guard Options

Post by TeamRicky [enjin:6648771] »

We obviously need a veteran backup point guard and besides Greivis Vasquez there are other options. There are plenty of serviceable options this year and some better options in 2016. In 2016 the free agency crop has Mike Conley, Deron Williams, Brandon Jennings and George Hill.

Here are some point guards that are available as free agents this year or who are rumored to be available:

1. Jeremy Lin
2. Jameer Nelson
3. Rodney Stuckey
4. Mario Chalmers
5. CJ Watson
6. Mo Williams
7. Aaron Brooks
8. Andre Miller
9. Brian Roberts
10. Kendall Marshall
11. Ish Smith
12. Jose Calderon
13. Jarrett Jack
14. Raymond Felton (late addition)

Who on the list would you prefer over Vasquez assuming we can sign them as free agents or acquire them without giving up any valuable assets?

To be honest with a few exceptions where guys are probably more of 3rd PGs like our own Lorenzon Brown and maybe a guy like Corey Joseph there is t much separating some of these guys. Q said that over and over about Mo Williams last year that he wasn't that much better than JJ to get that excited about him. I think he was a better fit than JJ would have been but these guys are backups for a reason. Someone that's sort of decent will be available and Flip convinced Mo to sign on last year when some things were uncertain so I would imagine Flip could sell a decent vet guy on coming to the wolves this year.

Jack, Vasquez, Calderon, Mo Will, Price.

Those are the guys I like out of the names that have been mentioned.

I like Jarrett Jack the best. Also, I think Jameer Nelson and Calderon if healthy could run the offense. Jeremy Lin supposedly has improved his defensive play and is another name to consider. Mario Chalmers does some things I like (3s and steals and has gotten praise for his defense). Raymond Felton has had his ups (Denver) and downs but might feel he has something to prove.

I like Cory Joseph clearly most of listed options. Jack and Vasquez would be also OK.

Nelson and Lin would be my top choices. I always liked Nelson and think he would be a good backup if we drafted a young PG for this team as a 3rd option. (Joseph Young)

I like Joseph a lot too. CJ Watson would be a good option too.

If not for the apparent fragility of Rubio and the high potential that the backup point guard may end up playing significant minutes I like Andre Miller. I believe he would provide the right kind of leadership for a very young team.
