Flip 2 for 3 on 1st Round Picks
Flip 2 for 3 on 1st Round Picks
It's early, but by a preliminary assessment I'd say that Flip has hit on at least 2 of his 3 first round picks since taking his current position as head of basketball operations.
A very early assessment suggests that Flip hit on the LaVine pick and may have hit a home run. I think we've seen enough of Dieng last season and this Summer League to conclude that he was a very nice pick, especially where he was taken. And we can't even say that Flip missed on Shabazz. He has some serious limitations in his game and I would have much preferred McCollum, Hardaway or the Greek Freak. But I like how hard Shabazz plays and given how hard he works and his level of intensity he could become a decent player.
Overall, I'd say Flip has done well in his two drafts to date.

Great point Lip. Its nothing new but if you want to be good you have to do gets some guys in the draft. LaVine is blowing my mind and Dieng looks to at least be a backup and just the type of guy this team has needed for years.
Also remember last year late in the 2nd he also picked up that undersized stretch euro center with a name that starts with a D that put up even slightly better numbers last year over there. So far Flip has basically seemed to draft better with lower picks than the guy before him who basically has Rubio and whatever Budinger can bring after all those picks. Pretty pathetic. Sigh

I still refuse to give Flip credit for a draft he wasn't proud of.
As for LaVine, I have my opinion on him. Nothing he could do in SL could change my mind about him. Prove it when it matters and I might come around on Zach. Til then, he's a domestic draft and stash

Remember that year I drafted 3 point guards, thinking I was smarter than everyone else? Remember how I had a great opportunity with 3 high picks to turn this team around?

You're still on this huh?

Good point Lip. We certainly got good talent by LaVine, Dieng and Shabbaz and even Robinson in the last drafts. But the real test for Flip now is, how he is going to develop these talented players as a players and as a group/part of our team, and in the N.B.A.
Lip, of course you can argue that this is the job of the coach of the team, but ... well, you know.

I agree, Eitan.

Way, way too early to evaluate Lavine and questionable on Shabazz and Dieng. I love Dieng too so far but let's just wait for a full season and have this discussion then.
But it's fun to speculate, better than talking about the Love trade.

Yeah, it bugs me too when people assume Flip wasn't proud of that draft...I would have been, and I assume he was. I saw a very tired Flip who looked like he had been up all night at the press conference the next morning. I'm not a psychologist or a mind reader, so I can't tell you if he was proud of his moves or not. He expressed surprise that KCP was picked by Detroit and certainly gave the impression that he would have picked him, but I think he was mostly talking about how things don't always go as planned, and he went into scramble mode. But I will always think that being able to turn the 9th pick into Shabazz and Gorgui was a brilliant move, and I suspect Flip does too. I agree with many others that the almost 7 footer from Greece could have been a better pick at 14, but it also was far from a sure thing. I suspect that's why he went out on the limb with Zach this year.

That would be Borjan Dubljevic. Don't sleep on him, he's got some potential too.
