Should Sacramento Kings resign Royce White?

WRITTEN BY NATE LINHART POSTED: 05/31/2015, 10:00AM

Former-first round pick Royce White hasn't played an NBA game since the 2013-14 season when he was given a chance to play with the Sacramento Kings.

If the free agent is in good shape and is ready to play now, the Kings may be considering resigning him.

White was a multi-talented player out of Iowa State, who's draft stock plunged when teams didn't want to take a chance on his well-documented anxiety disorder.

However, reports now believe White is ready for another chance at the NBA.

The Bulls and Pelicans are two teams rumored to be interested in White.

But Kings need all the help they can get, and he could be a "low risk, high reward" player.

White was a "double-double" machine in 2011-12 for Iowa State and averaged 13.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and five assists per game. White was considered by many as a point forward, possessing a guard-like vision from the forward spot, an arsenal of post moves, soft touch on a mid-range jumper and the ability to battle for rebounds on both ends of the floor.

The Kings could use White, especially if he ends up living to his potential.

Look at Hassan Whiteside, sometimes it takes a few years to find a rhythm.

Per Bleacher Report:

But talent always wins out -- just look at Hassan Whiteside, who had flamed out of the league several years before landing with the Miami Heat this season and becoming an overnight sensation.

If White is interested in playing again and the Kings are interested in the versatile forward, then the two could be considering a reunion.

I'd like to place emphasis on this point relating to Royce White and not me wanting him on the Wolves.

I think MN would be his best fit in the whole NBA. He is from MN and if we gave in and told him you don't have to travel with the team and only have to show up for home games that would be his best chance for success. The problem with that is that it kinda sets an unfair standard for the whole rest of the team. It might also create highs and lows for the team if he does wind up actually being good. I think the after mentioned reasons are why he will never make it in the NBA. If MN is lottery bound again come late next season it would be an interesting scenario to watch, not sure it would be the best thing for a young team to be around though.

TU - I also wouldn't want him on this team if he can't travel. If he can travel I woudl love to invite him to camp and see how he works out. I would think a Hoiberg reunion would be best place for him, but not sure how he fits that team.

If you're too soft to get on a plane with your teammates as a professional (paid) basketball player, then why should I want my team to go to battle with you? No thanks. I don't want the guy.

It warms my heart when criminals and malcontents get second and third and fourth chances because they can play sports.

The last article I read White said he would travel and that was never part of the issue. i don't know what went down with him and Houston so I am not sure I am buying that. What I do buy is that he has a legit mental health issue and it needs to be dealt with. What is his plan? What is the team's plan that is looking to sign him? Do those plans match or make any sense? Larry Sanders story of walking away from the game is interesting because he has some mental health issues as well. I'd be interested in White but he needs the right situation to succeed even more than the typical reclamation story. From what I read from him when he was with the Rockets I wished he had handled his outspoken talk about his mental health issues with more class. It's a big probl in this country and it needs to be dealt with on a much much larger scale than it is.

The dude has legit mental health issues. On one hand, I feel bad for the guy. On the other hand, I ask myself why any team would even consider him when there are hundreds of other talented guys out there without any major problems like this? It would be one thing if he was a Dennis Rodman type talent. But I don't think he's proven to be that level in his limited opportunity and I'm not sure he'll get a chance. That said - I wish the guy the best.

I don't think his mental health issues are the only things holding him back. From stealing stuff while at the U of M to his distraction filled tirades with Houston, White doesn't seem to have a ton of maturity helping matters.

I would assume the anxiety issue and how to deal with it (not being able to travel etc.) would be at the forefront and the stealing something as a freshman would be much further down the line. I don't think he had any brushes with the law at Iowa - so I'm not sure how much that really plays into things at this point. But maybe.

True. I was just trying to illustrate the point that it seems to always be "something" that gets in the way of Royce White actually playing basketball. Sometimes, it's him posting an odd youtube clip announcing he's done with the sport... instead of telling his coach about it personally.

It all adds up to only 57 competitive games (college/NBA/D-League) in 5 seasons.

I just don't see why he's worth it at this point. But who knows... comeback and redemption stories are always nice.
