How tall are they really?

Post by Carlos Danger »

I know the team listings often reflect embellished player heights. I was curious to compare Towns to what we have - height wise. So I went to Draft Express to see what our "Bigs" pre-draft measurements were (without shoes):

Garnett: 6'-11.0
Towns: 6'-10.25
Hamilton 6'-9.75
Dieng: 6'-9.75
Payne: 6'-9.00

This is my least favorite measurement of all time. You don't play basketball in your socks so why does your height without shoes matter? An inch or two sized sole isn't much of an embellishment when it comes to height. The only real embellishments are like Beasley being 6'10 in college when he was 6'7 and change. Or Cole Aldrich being a 7 footer who turned out to be 6'9 and change. I think it takes greater than a two inch embellishment to be worth noting.

Completely agree Khans. I think it's mostly just some players listing with and some without shoes. I'd like to see the NBA just pick one. Either measure players with shoes or without. I don't care which just pick one lol.

As for KG.. it was often said that he was actually taller than his listed height, but he didn't want to be known as a 7 footer or something lol. In reality KG probably just went by his height without shoes while others go with shoes.

Measuring without shoes is a pretty reasonable baseline. Most of the time I think an inch or 2 is not a big deal when it comes to player's length and the standing reach measurement has to be imperfect sometimes because it just doesn't add up and who always puts their arms straight up and down when playing defense etc anyway?

The bottom line is the height of the players in the first post of this thread is pretty good for NBA bugs no matter how you wanna look at it.

I don't know...I think it's the most fair measurement. For me personally, I want to know how tall the player is - not how high his shoes are. Obviously it's not the only way to look at things. Wing span is probably even more important. And vertical. Anyway - it was just something I was curious about so I thought I'd share what I found.

These guys have their footwear basically tailored to them and some probably have a bunch of padding in the sole to prevent foot problems hence some of the guys playing with 2 inch soles. My old Nike basketball shoes basically have a 2" heel and I don't have anything special in them like a gel insert that could boost me an extra half inch on top of that. That's why I don't really scoff at anything 2" inches and under when it comes to the difference between height with and without shoes and at the end of the day they play in shoes so that is part of their height on the court. It's nice to know we don't really have any gimmicks on our team though. Also I'm convinced Durant is the tallest guy on the floor half the time and ESPN still has him at 6'9. That dude is 7' tall. I also thought the running joke with KG was always that he was 6'12, not 7'.

I'm waiting for Lip to comment here on the importance of overhead reach!

In addition, I think weight and strength is important. We know that offensively, Pek struggles against length, but defensively, he's also understatedly good at keeping bigs out of the paint. Ideally, of course, you want both length and strength. That's why I'm a little worried about Pek not being able to play this year. Defensively, we don't really have a block of cement like he's been able to give us. I even miss Jeff Adrien a little bit!

I wonder what the chances of resigning Brewer (and his short arms) is. If not, maybe we can see what Al Thornton is doing with his long arms.
