Then you might as well hang onto him until the trade deadline. Teams might not offer the proven players at the deadline, but the picks will always be there. One negative is you won't get the picks for this years draft, but in reality,no one knows if this draft will be better then future ones

Pretty big negative, alex. Don't see how you can just toss out this year's draft like it isn't full of talent. There's guys projected to go in the 2nd round that would have been lottery picks in last year's draft. Who's to say the picks in whatever year we choose have a strong class of talent? You don't know that and that's why taking picks in this draft would be significant.

The big difference is that if you trade Love for picks in this years draft, you know exactly what pick you have and who will probably be available at those picks. In February, teams will be less likely to gamble on Love and even less likely to offer a pick that may be good. There are too many variables about a draft a year from now compared to one in 5 days. Love will also have more control over what team gets him, further dwindling the value.

And then there is Flip's ego, which might believe he can still turn Love from the dark side...

2 reasons this isn't true...
1) This is supposed to be one of the strongest drafts ...ever. Next year is not the same.
2) Teams that would trade for Love would not likely have lottery picks....if they were a nonfactor, then Love won't re-sign with them.

Re: If your going to trade Love for picks
You can't wait until the deadline to trade him for picks because they could be the worst team in the league, but if you deal Love to them they instantly become a mid-lottery at worst team. You are essentially trading for a pick that you are simultaneously making worse by giving them Love. That makes no sense. I think the OP is completely the opposite of fact. Teams offer proven guys at the deadline when they realize they don't have enough to get the job done. Meanwhile, bad teams would rather just stay bad and keep the top pick and go into the next offseason with that top pick than trade for a possible half-season rental that sticks them in the middle lottery just in time to lose him. This is as good a draft as any to get picks. The problem is that Flip becoming the coach has now turned his GM mind into a coaches mind and no coach wants to be on the bench for a rebuilding team. The a-hole is going to take the deal that makes his life easier now than the deal that can make the franchise a long-term success if he gets the picks right.
