David Blatt Cavs new head coach

Post by mrhockey89 »

The general consensus amongst the NBA was that he is a great coach, but you would want a year from him as an assistant before he took over the reigns here since the NBA is so much different from world basketball.

What does everyone think about this move by the Cavs?

And by Blatt?

In my opinion Blatt's 3 options were:
1) Head coach of the Cavs
2) 1-2 years as an assistant for the Wolves, then takes over as head coach
3) Assistant with the Warriors, unlikely to become head coach, but more likely to get poached by another team for a head coaching candidacy after a couple years as an assistant.

It appears he decided to take the biggest risk (probably got the most money this way though) in taking the Cavs coaching position. Good luck to him though. Wonder if this changes the Love saga at all.

For the Cavs I think it took guts to hire him. Its pretty risky since people are already talking about what Kyrie wants to do etc. On the other hand I don't know what vet/recycled guy even with a pretty good resume was a guy that was an obvious pick to coach there.

For Blatt its a no-brainer he gets to be a head coach and Cleveland has a pretty decent roster has the #1 overall pick and is in the East. Why wait around when you can just take this opportunity?

The question that has been raised by Zgoda (he actually makes a good point score!!!) is whether Blatt will have interest in Shved? Flip said on Funckadelic a couple weeks ago that people give up on guys too quick when it was mentioned Shved was a lost cause. The Cavs were interested when teams were trying to sign Shved. I wonder what Flip does if they do show interest?

Smart but ballsy hire. Broussard (joke) and a local beat writer said this hire may eliminate any shot, however minimal, they had at LeBron returning. Well respected but unproven in the NBA it'd take a giant leap of faith from LeBron.

You're probably right that he does have a more interesting roster than a standard team that would get the #1 pick. After all, he does have a team that won over 30 games, is in the East, and lucked into the #1 pick in a strongly thought of draft. And then of course they also underachieved last year. Lots of upside to be had. Then they even have the possibility of adding Love, although I don't think that'll happen.

You bring up a good point on Shved. Shved is the reason that I thought it was odd that Blatt turned down the Wolves as early as he did. I figured there'd be a comfort level as well as the idea of untapped potential in Shved that a guy like Blatt would be perfect for bringing out.

Love+Shved for #1, Bennett, and Jack? (wouldn't be excited about Bennett, but it's a necessary evil in my scenario) :)

Hard to say he took the "biggest risk" going to the Eastern conference where he has Kyrie Irving and the #1 pick. I think a lot of us wanted him to come here, but let's be honest: coming to the Wolves was BY FAR the biggest risk (none of us know who will be on this roster THIS season let alone NEXT season when Blatt might take over).

I say biggest risk because he's thrust into the head coach role in a league he's got no experience in (and their front office is pretty unstable). His roster and conference I agree are just fine.

One thing I gotta say is the commentary (I have said this too) that this hire keeps Lebron from going to Cleveland or lowers whatever possibility there is. What coaching hire gets Lebron to Cleveland? I can't think of a single guy that would move the meter on that. Heck Lebron might be intruiged by Blatt for all we know. I doubt it but none of the other coaches seem to be that exciting for Lebron at least with the info (probably pretty limited) I have. Honestly I think its gonna be either Miami or Cleveland this summer for Lebron with some pretty small percentage he goes anywhere else.

Could at least get his thoughts on the issue. Where's Blatt going that they couldn't wait a week and a half to take a meeting with LeBron to fish out a list of candidates he'd be interested in? It's not a big bargaining chip but it's a ploy they could have used.

You make a good point. Word was Blatt was ready to make a decision and would have gone to GS to be top assistant with Kerr if the Cavs hadn't offered him the job.

Well if it doesn't work out, I'm sure Mike Brown will still be available. :thumb:
