Lorenzo Brown Hype thread

Post by Monster »

Ok maybe not a hype thread but he had a solid first SL game and I have some thoughts on him.

This week I watched some highlights both from college and pro. He is sort of an odd player in some ways. He has sort of an old man game to a certain extent. Ita almost toigh to peg what kind of player he is. He isn't a scorer he doesn't play as a strong lead PG in some ways either. He has the length to play SG but his 3 point shooting is questionable.

My big take away from what I saw is that he is a good ball handler he often isn't strong enough with the ball. I have a theory why that is. He uses different pace and his feet are always under control and he is smooth but that also keeps him from planting strong when being defended. He can get knocked off balance and has to pick up his dribble or compromise him. Because he doesn't plant hard he doesn't explode to the basket.

Obviously some of that under control footwork and all that has its benefits too. His size and ability to cut off the ball (highlights of him doing it at the d-league) makes him a guy you can play as an off guard or combine him with another guy like Lavine. His upside is there as a decent combo deep bench guy is there sort of a Gary Neal type impact player with a different skillset. I am not making a case for him as a guy we should have on the roster next year just sharing some observations that I think worth considering as we watch him play.

If he can learn to be stronger with the ball and utilize his length better on defense he might be worthwhile even if his 3point shooting stays suspect. Obviously if he can hit 3's that would be pretty good. He has a nice shot but it's more of a midrange type strock kinda like Ramon Sessions only Sessions was better at it and was better at getting to the rim.

The other thing about Brown is does he actually lead his team vocally etc while playing the point? Some guys like Sessions do good things but I think he never really lead all that well ok maybe good enough for a backup but imo he had enough talent to be a solid starter on the right team. It never really happened. My expectation for Brown is obviously lower than Sessions but he needs to be good in leading his team as a PG to be worthwhile.

For me all LoBrow has been missing in the past was a jumper, you can't teach 6'5". He is a solid defender and stays with in himself rather well (he's not going to try and do things he's not capable of). I think he's a hard guy to make comparison's too as there aren't many PG's with his size / skill set. If I had to make one I'd say a poor mans Derek Harper up to this point.

As for his leadership, from afar he seems like the type to lead by example but its hard to know with out being at the practices or seeing him up close in numerous games. I'd much rather give him time to develop his craft along with LaVine, and T. Jones than bring in a veteran. There is nothing in the FA market that interest me enough to take away from those three players minutes of development.

Good LoBrow analysis, guys. I'm intrigued by him, and found it interesting that Saunders had him at the 2 when Tyus was in. I like both him and Robbie, and would be comfortable with either one as our 15th man.

Looks like Brown is at least a camp body now but I would think he has some sort of chance to make the roster IF there is some other moves.

I do think what has been lost in the discussion of whether to keep him or add a vet PG is his legit length as a SG and he likely played a fair amount of minutes there or at the very least alongside other combo guards in the d-league. Maybe playing some off the ball helped him with his 3 point shooting.

I'm not dying to have him on the roster or anything but maybe he would agree to sign a d-league contract on the Wolves affiliate with a chance at a roster spot with the Wolves down the road. He could develop his game playing either as a SG or PG (probably would play both) with minutes there and he would at least stay with one organization for an entire season which he may like after bouncing around his first 2 years.

@DWolfsonKSTP: Source: #Twolves and Lorenzo Brown agree to reworked deal. He will be here for training camp. Still has partial guarantees. Dates shifted.

This to me is a sign that Tyus Jones can't handle the NBA lifestyle.

Interesting. I guess this is more a reflection of how thin we are at SG. LaVine and Martin are the only two "true" SGs, so you may be onto something here. It doesn't hurt to have multiple ball-handlers and LoBrow has the size to play some SG.

Hummel can play some SG. What position didn't he play last year?

I am pretty sure he did some coaching too. He must be making some serious cash over there for Olimpia with all that versatility.
