I'm liking this pick the more I look into Nowell. He has a real nice looking shot (not sure why he didn't take more 3's) and has some nice moves. He seems to be able to make some good simple passes with the ball. When he gets the ball in the open court he looks pretty speedy in the open floor. Below is a highlight of him against Gonzaga. He had 3-4 finishes over Brandon Clark. =)

And his measurables are pretty decent as well, including a 38.5 vertical...

I've had my eye on Nowell since I started thinking about the draft a couple months ago. His stats are really impressive, including 50.2% shooting, 44% 3-point shooting, 5.3 boards and 1.3 steals. He looks like a terrific ball-handler and has a nice looking shot with a very quick release. He has a 6'7.25 wingspan, which just is great for a PG and respectable for a SG. He had excellent times in his sprints, shuttle and agility tests. And as Tim noted, he has really good hops with a 38.5 max vertical in the combine. I look at Nowell as an exceptional value at #43.

I was looking at a those other athletic stuff and Nowell was what top 20 in pretty much everything. There was lots a of chatter about how high Brandon Clarke was in that stuff too. Personally I only put so much stock in that testing but I was interested to see that Nebraska's Isaiah Roby was often just a tick behind Clarke in a lot of these tests except not quite the vertical (much longer though). Watching Roby quite a bit both live and on TV he does move really well. His issue is playing strong and being consistent in pretty much every phase. He can be really impressive when he gets going.

I watched this game Washington against Stanford which gave me a chance to see 3 drafted players Nowell, Thybulle and Lip's guy KZ O. LaPhonso Ellis was the color guy on the broadcast and did a solid job.
One thing about Thybulle in this game was he seems to have a pretty good handle. I don't know what he will do with it at the next level but it looks like he can at least dribble around.
KZ looked like a raw combo forward with hands about as bad as Wiggins in the first half. The 2nd half he really good rolling. I can see what Lip liked him. He plays really high and I'm not sure about his defense. It seemed like Washington got whatever they wanted. He has some nice offensive skills around the basket and some ball handling to get there.
Norwell when he gets a clean shot it looks so good its often shocking when it doesn't go in. HE missed a FT late in the game but it was so soft it bounced around a whole bunch before falling off. He had a few nice passes and then a could that were off target somewhat badly even on some swing passes. He seems to be a guy that is plenty happy to play within whatever is going on and not selfish. He had a couple plays in transition where he didn't end up with finishes when they should have been easy. He lost the ball just over half court after a steal and another time he blew a dunk although there was a guy closing in behind. His footwork is advance but I think if you want him to just get a bucket he may need to time to get to his spot. He moved without the ball (made a couple nice cuts) and was also good getting to the basket off actions or screens. He really blew past someone in the 2nd half and went to crush a dunk which...he missed again but it was a nice play to get there. He doesn't take a ton of 3's buy if this is how they play I can see why. Lots of guys have the ball and other guys take outside shots. Green looks like he could shoot about anywhere. I could see him being more more volume catch and shoot guy at the next level. I could see him being able to get you some buckets against bench units especially if he had a size mismatch where he would be able to just shot over a smaller guard.
Washington plays a zone defense and their coach was an assistant at Syracuse. Nowell always looked engaged. early he had a couple poor closeouts but he looks to have good instincts and good hands digging for the ball etc. He is big enough to put up some resistance. Assessing guys that play in a zone is always tough but they did play a good zone although obviously it helps having a player like Thybulle playing in a zone.
Ultimately I like Nowell. There are no perfect prospects but he is another guy that seems pretty solid at alot fo things and that shot is just really nice. If that shot translates and he can actually handle the ball and not be liability on D he could at least be a worthwhile bench player. Not back for a 2nd rounder. I'm interested to see him in SL.

That certainly wouldn't be the worst thing. Ellington with a little better dribble drive game.

Yes, think he could. That's a pretty good choice since both are similar in size and had similar college stats. I'm really high on Nowell so I'd actually be disappointed if he only became as good as Ellington - even though Ellington became a very solid NBA role player. Comparing the sophomore college stats of both players, Nowell had slightly better stats across the board - FG%, 3-pt%, rebounding, assists and steals. Watching both play, my eye test tells me Nowell is a much better ball handler than Ellington coming out of college. And I think Nowell has a lot more moxy or dog in him than Ellington.
I'm going to go out on a limb and proclaim Nowell the steal of the draft. This marks the first time I have ever proclaimed a Wolves draft pick to be the steal of draft. I didn't even accord that honor to Okogie or KBD - two guys who I considered much better prospects than their draft position would otherwise suggest.

I would vote for Brandon Clarke as the steal of the draft

...although their rookie years were very much in line with their draft position. I like Okogie a lot, but mostly because of his energy and highlight-reel plays (the block on Harden, a few of his dunks, etc.). But that was all eye candy relative to his actual performance, which was well below average. Still, he's got all the traits to indicate there is a lot more upside. We'll see.
As for the topic at hand, I know nothing about this guy. Seems to have a good NBA name - Jayden Nowell - I like it.
