Pj Dozier

Post by kekgeek »

Free agent PJ Dozier is signing a deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, sources tell ESPN. Dozier is coming back from a December 2021 ACL injury. Dozier played with Denver under new Wolves president Tim Connelly.

This signing is interesting. I had him on my free agent shortlist earlier in the summer when we were discussing how to round out the roster. He's long and rangy, plays hard, and a decent defender. Not much of a shooter, though. He'll be a good addition for camp.

I wondered if he would be a guy that was brought in since he has ties to Connelly. I wonder how long it will be till he is healthy? This might be a signing not just for later in the season (rehabbing in Iowa) but he might be a guy they sign/resign for next season. I think there is a somewhat legit chance he ends up playing for the Wolves this year if there are injuries.

PJ coming off injury has good size and a lot to play for. If he comes back strong he can earn a lot more money and stick in the NBA if he doesn't show much it might be the end of the road for him in the NBA. He's really just some good health and the development of a jump shot away from being a good player.

I've never seen much promise in Dozier. I agree he seems to have the physical attributes to be an NBA player, but it's never really come together for him either in college or the pros. I'm afraid that if he ever sees the floor for the Wolves, it will be because of a slew of unfortunate injuries with our SFs, because he has to be considered behind Jaden, Anderson, Prince and even Minott on the depth chart. I see him as nothing more than an insurance policy in case things go terribly wrong.

I agree he is an insurance policy. I will also say that I think Dozier is a guy that you look at his stats and be like well he isn't that good. Meanwhile it's also worth noting he was playing some legit minutes for a few years with Denver who was a playoff team. A few months ago Jokic said they really missed Dozier when he was injured. I think he is a guy that helps more than the basic stats show. I think a comparison would be Okogie who I believe can be a useful player especially on the the right roster. I'm not sure Dozier is as good of a defender as Okogie but I also believe he is a much better ball handler and has ability to make some plays for himself and others compared to Okogie although that's obviously a pretty low bar. He can play backup minutes at 3 positions. Sure there isn't a ton of upside from Dozier but for a guy they signed with the idea that IF they have injuries and if he is recovered they may have a guy they can bring up from Iowa and have ready to go...not bad.

I don't see Dozier seeing the floor for the Wolves at all because I don't see him making the final Wolves roster unless there's a major injury in training camp and even then I'm not sure he'd end up on the roster. Here's the current Wolves roster:

1. DLO
2. Edwards
3. McDaniels
4. KAT
5. Gobert
6. JMac
7. Nowell*
8. Prince
9. Anderson
10. Reid*
11. Rivers*
12. Forbes
13. Wendell Moore
14. Josh Minott
15. Knight*
16. AJ Lawson (2-way)
17. Paschall (2-way)

1. Dozier
2. CJ Elleby
3. Luka Garza

The Wolves already have their 15 allotted roster spots filled with players under contract. Only four of those 15 contracts are no guaranteed: Nowell, Reid, Rivers and Knight. Obviously, there's no way the Wolves will let Nowell or Reid go in favor of Dozier or anyone else. I think it's almost as implausible they'd let Rivers go. And I just don't see the Wolves. Letting Knight go after they made a point of signing him to a regular contract rather than a two-way and given his friendship with McDaniels. It seems clear that Finch and the front office really like him. And if the Wolves let Knight walk I would think they'd replace him with a big like Garza or Paschall, not a wing like Dozier.

I will say Dane Moore on his podcast said he is sort of expecting Naz or Knight not to be on the wolves roster to open the reason. Don't know if he is just speculating or has inside info

"I've been saying for the past month that I've heard it is over a 50% chance that D'Angelo Russell is traded this offseason.

Conversations with a few non-Timberwolves sources today suggest a Russell trade is now even more likely -- either tonight or the first week of July."

I think Dane Moore does a fine job, but it's been apparent that he's not nearly as clued-in as he would like fans to believe.

It's certainly possible that Naz Reid and/or Nathan Knight lose their current hold on a roster spot, but it's not exactly something I would expect. Those camp signings would actually need to earn a spot over them and that's really difficult to do over the course of a couple weeks.

I'm with you Cam. I could see a scenario of Naz being traded if the Wolves got some sort of value back for him but to be honest even though he might not play much this is a team looking to win games and having depth is something that is key. Meanwhile I don't think it's particularly likely that a team gives up something that makes the Wolves be like yeah we will give up a solid NBA player so we can keep Luka Garza or whatever. I think it's unlikely that the Wolves moved Knight or Naz and didn't add a big back to the roster in one way or another. There will be some decent players cut before the season starts too which is another reason why I don't think Naz will get moved. To me right now the roster is pretty balanced except the Wolbes are lacking in depth at PG but I think Rivers brings more there than some people give credit for espcially his size and defense if he ended up playing at that spot.
