Okogie
Perhaps a silver lining. My eye test tells me he's got a broken shot and poor instincts when driving to the hoop, but that he plays his ass off. The numbers suggest that we have a classic "do shit" player that may ultimately be a net plus. At minimum, he should be in the rotation for the sole reason that it appears he actually gives a shit.
Onto the numbers...
- Leads the regular rotation players in Net Rating...by quite a bit actually (see my prior Derrick Rose post). It's still negative, but that appears to be everyone else's fault.
- Second among regular rotation players in Defensive Rating (Tyus Jones is first).
- Per 36 minute Numbers:
Points - 12.7
FG/3PT/FT - 29.6%/22.2%/84%
Rebs - 7.5
Assts - 2.3
TOV - 1.0
Stls - 1.6
Blks - 1.3
PFs - 3.6
So a guy that defends, gets lots of rebounds and deflections, and minimizes turnovers and fouls. Not bad. About that shot....

The shooting will come with him. I'm not always sure with guys that come to the Wolves, but I'm confident in Okogie.

Common sense says that it should have been him starting opposite wiggins during this butler mess.

His FT% certainly indicates some potential. Of course, we've seen this movie before with other Wolves as you say. Our ability to develop shooters as a franchise has been one of our biggest weaknesses, no matter the regime in charge.

I agree with Cam on this. I don't think Wolves history tells us anything about whether Okogie's shooting will improve. I don't think there is any correlation between the shooting improvement of past Wolves players and the prospects for improved shooting of any individual player today. Okogie is not only a good free-throw shooter, he was a good 3-pint shooter in college, albeit with limited volume. Yes, Ricky is a good free-throw shooter too. But Ricky just didn't have the life in his legs to extend his shooting range much beyond the 3-point line in my view. That's obviously not a problem with Okogie. Moreover, Okogie has too much athleticism not to eventually become a very good finisher on dribble penetration.
Re: Okogie
Watching the Bucks game right now.
Okogie shoots the 3 easily. Maybe the mechanics aren't there yet but it doesn't look like a struggle to get it up though.
Dude might not actually help the defense on a high level overall statistically but he is going to make guys work. He works hard has no issue getting into guys and his ability to move laterally is pretty amazing plus he is strong. He contested GF at the rim once which he got dunked on but all things considered the fact that Okogie's had was as close as it was to the ball is kinda impressive.
His ball handling looks better than I think people give him credit for. Multiple times he goes hard into the lane and......he passes it out to facilitate the ball moving around for a shot. This is a 20 year old rookie that's supposed to be raw. There seems to be some real instincts there as well as being able to draw fouls.
Also KBD has been sorta low key looking good especially as a smooth offensively player that finds his spots and has been able to get around the rim and use his length to finish. He looks like he belongs.

I agree with you on both Okogie and KBD, Monster. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the quality of Okogie's ball handling. It actually looks markedly improved since Summer League. My gut tells me he's going to be special. He has a lot of raw talent, but not entirely raw. And he has that special inner drive to compete and improve. He won't be Donovan Mitchell this season. But he could be Donovan Mitchell in two years.

He had a crossover to what could have been a step back 3 in the corner but it was like he was sorta surprised he got that open he didn't shoot it and I was like "whoa..." later in the game he had a couple plays where he got into some easy 16' midrange shots which I'm mute more ok with than the 21' footers Wiggins is known for. To me this was easily his most impressive game. KBD made me want to see him more and these guys...it's kinda scary but they sorta make me willing to dump the season and build for the future.

That's where I'm at Monster. I honestly don't see any point in trying too hard to salvage this season. The focuse should be on building around KAT, Okogie and perhaps KDB (maybe Tyus). Get the best deal possible for Butler, centered around young prospects and/or picks, hire a good PBO, hire a good modern-era head coach and make good draft decisions next summer. Those should be the top priorities right now.

That magical coach (only one person posted in the new coaching thread) should also be trying to get something out of Wiggins. Maybe not building an offense to cater to him but finding way to get more out of him. Dane moore has a podcast where they talked about getting more out of him without Wiggins even getting better. If nothing else pump up that trade value!
