If the arena is empty like it has been the past several years, you can buy from scalpers on the street significantly discounted. Buy the cheapest lower deck tickets you can find, and move into better seats toward the end of the first quarter.

But if they meet expectations this year and start drawing more fans, this might be your best option:

When I was looking at getting Twins tickets this summer stubhub was a great option. Tickets were pretty cheap. I would imagine even if the Wolves do well this year if you can go on a weeknight tickets at a lower price will be easy to come by. It also wouldn't hurt to see what the regular going rate for ticket is either. Sometimes I've gotten good deals from the primary source of tickets. I'm sure other locals will chime in with their knowledge.

is stubhub safe? We would want to get 2 tickets about 10 rows back against a playoff team form last year that isn't the Warriors or Cavs (likely too spendy)

I just have heard horror stories about people's tickets being fake when they show up to the gate and something about evil flash seats.

I went to a game later in the year last season. I used StubHub or SeatGeeks or one of those sites. I was surprised how much the tickets were for most seats. Our seats weren't great (1st row upper deck/baseline) but they were affordable.

It seemed like most of the lower bowl was $100+... I imagine the seats you're looking at are $200/$250.

Gopher men's basketball tickets were like $20 (from their ticket office) when I looked last year. I couldn't believe they were that much.

My office used to be across the street and I would go to many games week nights with scalped tickets. Even in 2004 you could get seats well below face value if you waited until 5 -10 minutes after tip off. The scalpers would bid against each other for you business. The point was I had to be willing to walk away if the price wasn't cheap enough. They didn't want to go home with worthless paper in their pocket. $0.25 on the dollar wasn't unheard of for vip seats.

I can see this from scalpers. It makes sense.

What I've learned over the years, however, is that you can't have your wife or kids anywhere close during negotiations. They ruin everything. Whether I'm trying to negotiate for a Messi jersey in a Mexican flea market, buying a car or purchasing a home...

... with them around... walking away isn't really an option.

[Note: Learned that too late.]

A few years ago while car shopping I learned my wife can be a ruthless negotiator. She was more than willing to walk away and offer ridiculously low prices. I think she got enjoyment out of talking the sales guys down.

Like you mention I'd say there have been times she probably influenced me to not get the rock bottom price too so it's worked both ways. Depending on the situation I'm not quite as bad off financially now I don't mind paying a little more than the bottom dollar.
