Assistant Coaching Front

Post by 60WinTim »

Okay, I think we have managed to beat the draft to death. And it is still 2 weeks away...

Just saw this blurb. Griffin was one of Thibs assistants in Chicago. Somehow, this feels like Thibs first setback with the Wolves, although I have no idea if he actually pursued Griffin.

Who needs Adrian Griffin when you have Sid Lowe out there?

Interesting Griffin picked OKC but that's a pretty good landing spot.

Gates went to Memphis Lowe got let go so we are left with David Adelman and Ryan Sanders plus the player development guy Vince Lagarza (sp). Competition for some of these assistants has been pretty fierce.

I kind of hope Thibs cleans house and starts this with all new people. I know some like Saunders Jr. but I hope nobody else comes back.

Let's even go to the extreme and say Ryan Sanders was basically dictated to Thibs and Lauden by Glen to stay on with the team. That may not have been a hard sell for Layden and Thibs. Keep in mind JVG has raved about the guy on a few occasions and various NBA players have given him props for his player development work. Not to mention it seems like a reasonable thing to do considering the circumstances to let the guy stay on.

It seems like Thibs and Layden have already done some house cleaning. How much more do they need to do? Let's say they keep David Adelman or Lagarza. It seems like the only reason they would keep those guys around is if Layden and Thibs thought they were worth keeping around. They have no ties to those guys if they weren't worth keeping around they would have already been shown the door.

Andy Greer and/or Ed Pinckney still seem likely.

Too many tweets to post them all so I'll summarize

Wolfson was asked about Adelman and he said he heard a couple weeks ago he was gonna be out but stopped shot of being certain.

Ron Adams name came up and Jon K said he is building a house in California so he is not going anywhere.

Basically nobody has heard a lot and it seems like Thibs wasn't going super crazy trying to move heaven and earth to get Griffin.

Scalabine was also mentioned. Here is a pretty amusing and interesting podcast where Scal talks about various stuff including his time as a player with Thibs and at the end whether he would be interested in coaching with Thibs or not. His answer is like much of this podcast amusing.

I am hoping the delay is because Thibs thinks he has a shot at Adams who would be a major coup. Thibs is in contact with the Alien, so he may be a target too. I am hoping Layden reaches out to Stockton who he knows very well from his Utah days. Some interesting possibilities, but longshots no doubt.

Surprising and disappointing. Perhaps those who've been Thibs' assistant don't like coaching with him. Sort of like the word that players didn't like playing for him. Oh, I know we've heard that Deng and Noah liked playing for him, but I'm not seeing players who've played for him lining up to come here. Griffin was rumored to be in line for the lead assistant role under Thibs. Maybe those reports were false. If not, then you have to wonder why Griffin would choose a lesser assistant position for the Thunder over a lead assistant role working for his old boss coaching the best up-and-coming team in the League.

Thing is, Griffin is close to being a head coach. He has already put in time with Thibs and learned from him. He has much more to gain by learning a new perspective from Donovan and getting to be a part of a deep playoff run. Thibs should be able to nab another up and comer or two that wants to learn his defensive tricks.
