How long will you give him?

Post by Carlos Danger »

Just had this thought while posting on a different topic and reflecting back to last year. How long will you give our new draft pick before you make a judgment i.e. "Super Star" or "huge disappointment" :-)

Here is where my viewpoint will be vastly different from some guys. I think you have to see a guy through almost 2 years before you can begin to make that type of judgment. The adjustment to the NBA is just different player to player. I think a lot of franchises make mistakes by judging their players too early. Either that, or they rush them too quickly and end up doing more harm to their career than good.

I'll know exactly what he needs to improve on after 25 games and hope he begins to turn the corner, just as Wiggins did last year. Satisfied?

False premise. A lot of us were judging current performance without projecting future end game (e.g. "trade him!" or "He's a bust!"). There is a difference.

(and let's not forget who the ninny was that started that thread. He basically started the food fight and then faded into the shadows as the rest of us duked it out....kind of clever actually).

Oh come on now. It's all tongue and cheek. I'm not going to be a hypocrite. When I saw Wiggins dribble in his first game, I was very worried. But the poll is semi-serious in that I'm curious where people draw the line on a guy. As I think about it more myself....it probably has more to do with age than years. In other words, I'd be more inclined to give guys like LaVine and Bennett more time vs. "older" guys like Payne or Bjelica if he were to come over. I'd say by 26 - you are pretty much looking at what that player will be (there will always be exceptions obviously). I have that age in mind as I look at guys like Rubio & Dieng.

Hopefully this board isn't as dumb with rushing to judgement like they were with Wiggins.

Bloop = Hopefully this board isn't as dumb with rushing to judgement like they were with Wiggins.

Yeah, some of those posts were really moronic

Can't tell if people are trolling, obtuse or just looking to cause trouble...

I don't think there is ANY magical set amount of time. You take it in stages. For example, Cleveland fans should have been alarmed when Bennett showed up to camp out of shape and then started off his rookie campaign 1 - 22 fg or whatever it was. Did it guarantee he'd be a bust? No... but should it have worried people enough for them to mention on a message board, "Hey, you know... it's not exactly a great sign that Bennett showed up to camp after being the surprise #1 pick in the draft fat and out of shape... and then struggled to make ANY shots for the first few games."

After another year that was mostly lost with only a bit of improvement, Bennett momentum hit a larger snag.

There's nothing wrong with discussing players' performance on the court, whether that's for 1 game or 700 games... as long as that context is taken into account.

So did you say 25 games? I think with #1 picks who get plenty of burn you know a lot the first year. It really comes down to how many minutes the pick plays.

Towns/Okafor likely won't get the minutes Wiggins got. Pek, KG, Dieng, and Hummel will get a lot of those minutes at PF/C. (kind of kidding with Hummel)
