It's a Tough League

Post by Lipoli390 »

The Wolves almost lost at home last night to a lottery-bound team team on the final leg of a back to back. I left the game high on the win but a bit down that we came so close to losing. But then I noticed that Miami lost to a Sixers team than many have dubbed the worst team in the League. The Clippers lost their opener to Laker team with a 40 year old PG, A Pau Gasol well past his prime and a bunch of journeymen only slightly above D-League level. I'm currently watching the Bulls struggling to beat the Knicks tonight in Chicago.

So as I reflect a bit tonight, I'm thrilled the Wolves squeaked by with a win last night. This is a tough League. The Wolves have a shot at making the playoffs. But they'll have to fight and claw to make that happen. They need to win games and I don't much care how they do it.

I'm not so sure Orlando is lottery bound...

One of the announcers made this comment tonight: bad teams can play tougher in the beginning of the season before they figure out they are bad.

I like it!

Managed to catch the GSW - LAC game today. Man how good is Chris Paul? and Steph Curry has to be the best jump shooter in the league. Both those teams looked a lot better than the Wolves....

As the Wolves begin their battle for a playoff spot, the only thing that matters at the end of the season is number of wins.

A win is a win. Nobody will remember how difficult it was. And, I discuss the easiness of playing a team playing the second end of a back-to-back on the ROAD probably more than anybody. But I don't think the doldrums have caught up to the teams yet. I don't think it matters as much the first week or two of the season.

Now, struggling to beat that same Orlando team in that same situation in February would definitely be embarrassing.

As long as Martin/Rubio/Pek/Love stay reasonably healthy, we will win our fair share of games. I define "fair share" as 40 or more games. To Lip's point, this league is tough, and there will be nights where we are beat by teams inferior to us on paper. I'm feeling pretty good about our starting lineup. Their health and the strength of our bench will determine how far we can go, but it's tough to envision us winning more than 50 games without a major breakout year from someone other than the core 4 guys.

[PREMATURE DOOMSDAY ALERT...]

Is the team in a position to find that player within the next two years. Because (here it is...) there is an incredibly high percent chance that Kevin Love isn't staying to battle for the 8th spot year after year.

Rubio might not either. I really hope the Wolves make the playoffs. And it will be exciting to follow the chase. But, it should only be the floor for what this team, as nearly constructed, should be capable of.

One more piece... one more piece...

I'm just not seeing it on the roster.

Obviously, I am in the minority. I see this team having everything it needs to be a contender, especially when Bud returns and works his way back to form.

The piece that most people seem to overlook is Kevin Martin. An efficient, high scoring wing that hits the 3 and gets to the line? WOW! Everyone is saying he didn't have a good game against Orlando, yet he had 23 points nad made some huge plays in overtime. Wait until he has a couple of good games -- the Kevin Martin bandwagon will not be big enough, and playoff euphoria will be in full swing!
