What is D-Will good at?

Post by markkbu [enjin:6588958] »

There has been much talk about D-Will on various treads lately (as there will probably be more in the future). The discussion includes minutes, position, which team (1st or 2nd) he should play with, etc.

The question that I always come back to is "What is he GOOD at?" and i have a very hard time answering that question.

Of people that play consistently in the NBA.

He is a below average rebounder (although an arguement can be made that he is less below average at the defensive end, he might even be on the low side of average).

He is not an efficient scorer.

He is a pretty bad 3 pt shooter.

His 1 on 1 defense is pretty ok.

His team defense not very good.

He doesn't get blocks, he doesn't get steals.

He is pretty good at getting to the line, but he doesn't hit a good FT%, so that sort of cancels itself out

From watching him play, his BB IQ doesn't seem very high.

As Q (most recently) and many other have pointed out, D-Will has already received a bunch of playing time.

I hope that he worked on his game this summer and is excellent at everything this year.

And this always leads me back to the question "what is he GOOD at?"

Getting to the line is always a positive regardless of personal FT%, going into the bonus early in a quarter is a real team advantage. He also creates mismatch problems for other teams. He was a young big who has been asked to develop primarily in backup minutes, I personally think his time replacing Love from injury last year will be great in the overall development of his game. I would ask what has he improved at so far and what areas do we think he will continue to improve at for a player in year 3.

I would ask what is DC good at. How about Brewer, or Hummel. Doesn't look like he has much competition to me.

It looks like DW is OK at almost everything, which is a lot more than we can say for the other SF's on the team. He is a good team defender since about the half way point of last season. I don't know how shooting 70% from the line cancels out FT shooting? If our team shot 70% from the field, we would win every game. The best part is that he will likely continue to improve, unfortunately we will likely trade him for next to nothing to get another below average vet on the team for Adelman.

DWill is the greatest almost dunker of all time. I've seriously never seen anybody almost throw down more massive dunks than him.

In the preseason, D-Will definitely improved his ability to finish at the rim after drawing the foul.
