Will Shved take a Pek leap?
It's a very interesting question for sure. Will he make the jump the second year like Pek did? Pek had fouling problems, Shved had fatigue problems. Two different problems but we want to know if he will make the jump and grow from the good start he had last season. He will be playing in the Eurobasket event this year and has played a few scrimmage games so far. Without Ak47, he looks like he will be the main scoring action on this team. Last year, he played in the Olympics and averaged 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 assists. I am not sure if you can find box scores for these scrimmage games, but on http://www.eurobasket.comEurobasket.com it shows player high's in points. Here are Alexey's past two scoring totals for each of those games:
Vs Bosnia (8/18/13) - 14 Points
Vs Slovenia (8/19/13) - 19 points
Pretty promising but again, we don't know what his actual stats are. Once they start the tournament, I'm sure box scores will be available. We can mark his progress along with how Rubio's doing in this thread as well. What do you think Shved's role is this upcoming season if he makes a Pek jump? Main SG off bench? Take JJ's minutes? Little of both? Good problem to have IMO.

Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
I keep forgetting we even have Shved these days. Minutes are going to be hard to come by on this team and Shved is one of those guys that could get 20 or be a DNP most nights. Will he get time at point behind JJ and Ricky? Will he play some 2 or 3 behind the stable of KMart, Cory, DWill and Bud? These are tough questions to answer right now. The good thing here is that we have the depth we need now and if he burns out (like last year) we won't need to rely on him for anything.

Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
I actually think Shved is the potential X-factor for us this year. The reason is that with the fragile and aging Kevin Martin starting at SG, we need Shved to step up so that K-mart doesn't have to play 35+ minutes per night. And if he does end up having to play this many minutes, then he'll likely get hurt.....meaning Shved would then likely start at SG.
I think Adelman likes Shved because he prefers having more than one playmaker on the floor. Any combination of Brewer/Budinger/Shabazz on the wing leaves the PG as the only guy that can be trusted to dribble the ball more than once or twice. Those three guys are best suited at SF playing with either Martin or Shved at the 2, or sometimes with Barea at the 2 on offense and Rubio playing the 1. That means the backup 2 role is for Shved to lose. And the better he plays, the more we can rest K-mart.
I highly doubt Shved will have a Pek-like sophomore campaign as a pro. But if he can straighten out his shot, I expect to see a lot of him at SG. If he continues to struggle with his shot though, that really exposes us at the 2 when K-mart isn't in the game and Adelman will likely favor a tighter rotation at guard with Rubio and Barea playing together more. And that's less than ideal.

Shved just need to hit jumpers the rest of his game is fine an can round out nicely I think Q pretty much laid out what I am thinking as well. I seriously think Shved has a pretty good upside. I am not banking on it, but I liked what I saw from him as a rookie.

Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
If Shved makes that kind of a leap, it wouldn't speak well of guys like Brewer, Budinger, and Barea who will all get some time at SG. Remember, Pek played well, but all Pek needed to do was outplay a disinterested Darko. Shved has a more uphill battle.

I'm looking forward to seeing him this year and hopefully a lot of the Rubio/Shved back court duo. Hopefully they mix him in at SG and PG while keeping Martin's minutes to around 30.

Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
Who did we trade Ridnour to the Bucks for to sign? I wouldn't have minded keeping him around as a backup PG/SG over Brewer or Budinger. (and only 1 year on his contract)
Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
Luke is what we gave up in the Martin sign and trade that allowed us to be able to sign Brewer. I like Luke but it didn't make much sense to go into the season with that many combo/PG type players especially after adding Martin. If you told me before the offseason started we would trade Luke for Brewer in a sign and trade I would have thought that was a pretty solid deal trading one fringe starter for another and we needed more wings than combo pg types.

Re: Will Shved take a Pek leap?
Shved is a consistent jump shot and a little more strength away from being an ideal 2. He has the size, ball handling, vision and defensive effort to be a good backup 2. He gives the second unit an additional ball handler. Even though he plays more like a PG, I think he is still best fit at the 2 because of those skills that he adds that a lot of 2's don't have. Houston plays Harden like a PG, but he is a 2 and I think Shved can play a similar role if he gets his jumpshot down because of the playmaking, defensive effort and size. It would be interesting to see what he could do next to a PG with legitimate size who could defend better than JJ and hit 3's. I really wanted to see Shved play next to Ricky more last year, but it just didn't happen as much as it should have. Adelman and his staff need to whip Shved and D Will into shape regarding their off-ball play and they should both be much better this year.
