Williams has no trade value. The Wolves simply like to overpay players who will see little time on the floor.

Not picking up Derrick's option would be nuts. Derrick has fallen far short of expectations to date, but he's very young and talented with considerable upside. And he actually played pretty well towards the end of last season. Failing to pick up is option would let him walk with nothing in return. Picking up his option gives the Wolves the chance to take advantage of any value he has or develops during the season either as a player or a trade asset.
