Kevin Martin Hurt
Kevin Martin Hurt
Bud Grant used to say that you always see the same players on the training table -- meaning that certain players have a tendency to get hurt and it is generally the same players every season. It's not always the same injury, but it is almost always something. We have two of those players on the Wolves roster. One has worn a Timberwolves uniform for a while. His name is Pekovic. The other has never worn a Wolves uniform before this year. His name is Kevin Martin. Over the course of his career, he has averaged less than 65 games per season -- missing lots of games nearly every season with a variety of different injuries. Martin's long history of missing games with injuries was the main reason I preferred Mayo over Martin.
Well, here we go. As Bud Grant might observe, Kevin Martin is back on the training table and not in the game. Martin missed tonight's game and played limited minutes two nights ago because of a sore Achilles. Even worse, he said he feels old and that he "has to get his body feeling better. " Of course, Martin could have said exactly the same things about himself several years ago at age 27. Now, at age 30 with a four-year guaranteed contract, he's already missing games in the preseason and questioning his own body. Everything may turn out to be fine. But there is definitely cause for concern.

I read over and over that it was all precautionary. Don't get everybody all worked up just because he sat out of a pre-season game. If he misses regular season time (games that actually count), then there's need for concern. Missing pre-season games don't mean much to me.
*Lip, you weren't a fan of the signing anyway, correct? How fitting that you were the one to bring this up lol.

Mayo sucks I would have almost preferred to signing nobody and saving money for later. We basically let one really good injury issue player in AK leave and added another in Martin. This early issue just shows how bad it could have been if both of them were here. The bottom line is there were no perfect SGs available this summer we got one lets hope it works out and move on.

I don't like this news at all. Wolves fans have to be a little gun shy after all the injuries of the past two seasons, and I cant help worrying that this is worse than they are letting on. Two days ago Martin assured us that this was not serious, and he was being held out for precautionary reasons only. But now they are saying the earliest he will play is October 20.
I like Shved and he has played well the past two games, but let's not kid ourselves. This is a much better team with a sharpshooter like Martin at the 2 and Shved coming off the bench. Let's hope the team is being honest with us, and this is just a minor injury.

LST, the reason Oct 20 is the earliest he would play is because after tomorrow nights game vs Toronto the Wolves have a full week off and don't play til the 20th

Thanks Shahidi. I saw that after I posted, and it made me a little more comfortable. I hope the Achilles issue is minor, because we need Kevin on the court popping those threes at a 40+% rate.
Re: Kevin Martin Hurt
I wouldn't be so concerned if not for Martin's long track record of missing lots of regular season games with various physical ailments. And that's when he was in his 20's. He's now 30 years old at the beginning of a 4 year contract. I hope things work out and, although I'm concerned, I'm not not pushing the panic button. But this team would really benefit from having Kevin on the floor developing some chemistry with his teammates. Kevin looked terrible in the preseason opener. He needs time on the court with his new teammates. I just hope his Achilles doesn't become a chronic problem for him this season. Time will tell.

Speaking of injuries, looks like Trey Burke is out 8-12 weeks. Well played Flip, well played!

Kevin Martin is practicing today. Bingo bango. We all should feel better. Drink a beer or two.
Re: Kevin Martin Hurt
I'll have the beer after he practices tomorrow, too!
(although I am in the camp that was never worried...)
