Did we just become too strong at one position and weak in another?

Post by alexftbl8181 [enjin:6648741] »

Sooo before this season you would of said we have toooo many PG and nothing in the SG/SF department. Going into this season does it look to be the exact opposite? Yes Ricky should play a ton, BUT if he gets injured or gets worn down by the end of the season, are you really comfortable with JJ playing 30 or so minutes a game?

A player like Lexi is a better player and passer then a guy like Luke, but Luke has shown he can run an offense unlike Lexi which makes him a better PG.

Now we seem to have way to many SG/SF. We either have players who we are paying a lot of money and can't afford not to play them IE Martin, Brewer, Bud, OR we have young players who need playing time in order to develop IE Dwill and Lexi.

Thats the problem trying to plug holes. Lets hope this time next year people aren't complaining that we desperately need a backup PG and need to trade one of our many SG/SF to get one.

Backup PGs are easier to find than quality wing players in my opinion. I'd rather be stockpiled on SG/SFs than have too little of them. Usually they're interchangeable players and that makes them more valuable. We'll be fine.

I don't see it that way, Alex. My understanding is that Adelman and Saunders think of Shved as a point guard first. If so, that leaves us with three point guards backing up Ricky, if you include Brown. I still think the team has the least amount of actual depth at shooting guard, with only Martin on the roster as a true shooting guard. I love the flexibility of this team, as Shved, Budinger and Muhammad can all be plugged into the SG slot if needed. But I would argue that it is a secondary competency for all three of them.

At all four of the other positions, I think we have at least three players for whom that particular position is their best position. I think this is why it is rumored that Flip is looking for a true shooting guard to be the 15th man, as opposed to Hummel or Brown.

I am more than happy with our depth at PG with Shved and JJ backing up Rubio. This year I expect Shved to be a better PG than Luke was last year.

Shved played a good bit of PG last year and did pretty good with it. He played the most PG in Dec before Rubio got back. He had multiple 10 assist games (Luke only had 1). He ran the offense well. And Shved averaged more assist/minute than Luke had (while Luke was playing more PG) I would expect him to get most of the backup PG minutes as opposed to JJ.

The SG/SF part of you post sounds like you are complaining about depth. I am happy that we won't have to start Gelabelly this year.

It seems very obvious to me that our team will perform much better than the 31 wins that we had last year, and will be the best Wolves team that we have seen in a long while.

I concur, Markbu, that Shveddy will be a more effective point guard than Luke. While we will certainly miss Luke's dead-eye mid-range shooting (one of the best in the game mid-range, I maintain), he has never been a good distributor. Shved showed in the Olympics and with the Wolves last year that he has a great PG mentality, to go along with excellent vision. He got himself in trouble occasionally by getting up in the air without a plan, which led to a few unforced turnovers, but I expect great improvement this year in that area. I also think he has more potential than Ricky to become an effective three point shooter, and forcing defenders to guard him closely opens up a lot of options for a PG

JJ provided some excitement off the bench last year and actually won 4-5 games for us. He may not like it, but I see him as the 3rd PG this year, not part of a regular rotation, but available to provide that unique JJ spark when things aren't working and we need to go in a different direction. If he is dissatisfied with this role, it may be in the best interest of the team to trade him mid-season. If Lorenzo Brown doesn't make the roster but shows good development in the D-League, it will make JJ much more expendable, and he may be attractive trade bait for a team that is hurting at PG.

As long as Shved forces up difficult shots and gets stuck making poor decisions by leaving his feet, it doesn't matter what position he plays. The fact was he became a liability for us last year as the season wore on. Let's hope he improves because I think he will be asked to be Martin's primary backup to start the year.

Q, I agree with you. Shved will be the backup sg to Martin and jj will be the backup pg. shved will be be used as a pg when Rubio or jj get injured. That's something I liked about shved. Ha can play both guard spots but I don't see him beating out jj for the backup pg spot.
