Tooting My Own Horn

Post by Camden [enjin:6601484] »

There was a bunch of discussion over two names that were brought up months ago as available players the Wolves should trade for. These two were trade targets I was strongly in favor, as were a slim few of others. To no surprise, the majority on this board tossed these guys aside like garbage.

Since being traded from the former teams, here are how Courtney Lee and Marcus Thornton have produced for their new teams, who acquired them for close to nothing (cheap-cheap).

- Thornton: 10 games, 24 MPG, 12.7 PPG, 47% FG, 40% 3P, 71% FT. Brooklyn went 7-3 in those games.

- Lee: 33 games, 31 MPG, 12.2 PPG, 49% FG, 34% 3P, 90% FT. Memphis went 24-9 in those games.

Considering the 2013 Timberwolves have needed another bench piece all year long, I find it ridiculous that these two players couldn't have had the same effect on this team. It's unfortunate no deal was made to bring one of them in. This season could be very different given better bench play. Oh well, though. Just wanted to share with you all how these guys have performed since leaving their old teams.

Tooooooot, toooooooot! :thumb:

Good fun, but a couple of things:

1. BKN and MEM both took on money in those deals. BKN can't be bothered with such things, and MEM had a little more wiggle room than MIN.

2. I can't help but feel that those team's improvement also coincided with the returning of players such as Marc Gasol.

You also were pining for Gary Neal who made Martin look foolish the other night. I think you could do better than Rob Babcock. Have Lip get an interview for you.

Let's talk about Cam's preseason predictions before you toot too much. You were downright Tim-esque in your optimism about this season. Whereas myself, Q, SJM and others had it pretty much nailed.

If I was right every single time, I'd be a billionaire. I do know that I was right about Courtney Lee and Marcus Thornton, though, which is what this particular thread was about. :thumb:

Not sure what thread it was, but I fully said I was wrong about my pre-season prediction. Unexpected regressions of Barea and Cunningham, the lack of improvement from Derrick Williams and Budinger's inability to recover from his injury ruined my 50-win prediction. Last but not least, I didn't expect Adelman to be as flat out stupid as he has been. Lot of factors right there that nobody (not even the great CoolBreeze, Q, sjm and others) could have predicted in entirety.

Just keeping it real Cam. If there's not a check and balance system any idiot can come on here and spout senseless predictions without reprocussion. I'm not saying that's what you do, in fact you don't. But remember my "Right About/Wrong About" thread? I think we all owned up to having been both right and wrong more than once.

That's fair. You're right.

I actually weaseled out of making a hard prediction on wins and instead went with a range of something like 41-49 games (IIRC), with our team health being the determining factor as to where we would end up within that range. I believe most folks had us pegged anywhere between 43-50 wins, which isn't that big of a range when you think about it. So I don't think anyone was wildly off base. Some were just a bit more optimistic than others.

Where a lot of us missed was in underestimating the strength of the Western Conference. I don't think anyone here predicted that it would take 48 wins to squeak into the playoffs.

I was with you, Cam, on wanting to deal for Lee. I never went on record wanting to trade for Thornton, but that's one of the acquisitions I would have liked to see us pursue before the trade deadline. I have no doubt we had the assets to get either one, but Flip chose not to pursue them. Sorry to say, but I think I'll eventually be right in my initial prediction that Flip would be a flop. He's not there yet, but unless he surprises us this summer with intelligence and savvy I don't think he has, others will ultimately join me in wanting Flip to follow Adelman out the door. Hope I'm wrong about Flip because if I'm right the Wolves will go from bad to worse and be very bad for a long time.
