Why I'm tired of Adelman, and why better days are ahead

Many of us have noticed that Ricky seems to be playing with a lot less joy this season. This article suggests that this might be the result of Adelman not letting Ricky be Ricky. Yes, Love has become a much better passer this year in accordance with Rick's plan and the starter's offense has been clicking. But does this offensive style maximize the potential of this team?

The first question in Flip's interview with prospective coaches has to be "How do you view Ricky Rubio's role on this team?" Flip was a pretty good point guard at the U of M, so I suspect that he really dislikes seeing the offense run through Love, and will be looking for a coach who can bring out the best in Rubio.

I don't mind the offense running through Love. Unlike any other big man on our roster, he can actually work from the high post and either shoot, drive, or make the correct pass to a cutter or to Pek on a quick duck-in. This is something we didn't see from Love until this season and I think it's worked beautifully.

What doesn't make sense is giving it to Pek at the elbow. He makes one pass and one pass only: The hand-off pass to the PG. It just seems like wasted movement because there is absolutely no threat of Pek hitting a cutter. Convert these sets into Ricky pick and rolls and we probably achieve the right balance.

This is something I have harped on before Q. If you watched Ricky when he played in Europe, they used him in a similar style. He would bring the ball up the floor, hand it off to a big and go stand in the corner. Complete miss use of Ricky's skills, and sets the offense up for a low percentage shot from Ricky when he is left open.

Leave the ball in Ricky's hands and let him create the offense. That is his strength.

Agreed. The Wolves run these kind of sets a lot. Rubio will run it up, hand it off to Love, run off a Brewer screen and come back to Love to get the ball outside the 3-point line. Such a waste of time, just let Rubio bring it up and create.

Adelman is Childress and Ricky is Favre. It makes so much sense; I don't know why I didn't see it before.

Let's not go overboard here. Rubio is, after all, averaging a career high in assists. This is NOT the same as Spain with Barca, where JC Navarro did most of the play making. Ricky still ends a lot of possessions in pick and roll action. I think we'd all like to see more of it, but it's OK to get away from it a bit too and work things through Love in the high post or even the two-man game that Love and Martin work on the left wing.
