I’ve come up with a list of potential PG trade targets for the Wolves in no particular order of preference and without speculating on what it would take to get any of them. I didn’t check to see which of them are free agents, so maybe some of them can be signed in free agency. Otherwise, it would have to be a trade. Of course, when you consider which Wolves players under contract have any meaningful trade value, it’s a very short list of five: Edwards, McDaniels, Anderson, KAT, and Gobert. The player with the least trade value on the court for the Wolves in that group is probably Rudy, but he’s also in my view the player who provides the least net value - especially long term. So I’d probably focus mainly on those who we might be able to acquire in exchange for Gobert. For now, I’m just providing my entire list of potentially gettable PGs without trading Edwards:
1. Cole Anthony (Orlando has lots of young PGs)
2. LaMello Ball (Probably not gettable, but I included him anyway)
3. Lonzo Ball (High risk with knee issue, but perfect get if he’s healthy and maybe cheap based on knee)
4. Dyson Daniels (Loved him in the draft. Didn’t do much this season, but still love his potential)
5. Kris Dunn (not young anymore, but still younger than Conley at 29 and playing well)
6. M. Fultz (He’s become a VG defender and he’d be that other dribble penetrator we need)
7. RJ Hampton (Hasn’t been impressive, but still young and like his potential)
8. Killian Hayes (Same as Hampton)
9. Bones Hyland (Terrific offensive potential. But wonder about his defense)
10. Jaden Hardy (Dynamic scoring potential. Would he fit well with Edwards? Would be defend?)
11. Tyus Jones (Never should have let him walk)
12. Tre Jones
13. Theo Maledon (Almost didn’t put him on my list, but I remember liking him in the draft)
14. Tre Mann
15. Monte Morris (Like his offense, but wonder about his defense. TC drafted him)
16. Andrew Nembhard (Liked him in the draft)
17. Scottie Pippen Jr. (Is he better than JMac? I put him on the list anyway)
18. Dennis Schroder (If the Lakers re-sign DLO, they won’t need Schroder and he probably wouldn’t want want to stay there)
19. Jay Scrubb (He’s been underwhelming, but still like his potential. ORL has lots of young PGs)
20. Ben Simmons (Should be available straight up for Rudy. But do we want him?)
21. Ty Ty Washington (Didn’t do much the season, but I liked him in the draft)
22. Blake Wesley (Same as Ty Ty)
23. Coby White (I wouldn’t be interested, but thought he belonged on the list)
24. Derrick White (He’d be my top pick and I think he’s gettable for Rudy. Not young at age 29, but younger than Conley.

Derrick White.
He'd have been available for a 1st round pick... just last season.
He was discussed here quite a bit.

Re: Potential PG Trade Targets
I think it’s more likely the Wolves address PG via free agency than via trade, since the cupboard is pretty bare for trades. Tyus and Tre Jones, Monte Morris, Coby White are all RFAs which is always tricky to sign.
Reggie Jackson, Fred Van Fleet (player option) are a couple of the non-restricted free agents. Westbrook and Dlo will also be free agents. Those guys may not be great fits for various reasons, either cost, age, or other.
Dennis Smith Jr may be an interesting option. Is Mudiay ready to step back to the NBA after his decent year in the G League? Who else should we have our eyes on

Tre Jones does a solid copycat version of other guys who have received praise here:Sundog wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 11:48 am I think it’s more likely the Wolves address PG via free agency than via trade, since the cupboard is pretty bare for trades. - Tyus Jones ($14M). 6.6 apg vs. 1.4 TO per game. Caretaker prototype. Both with 16.0 PER.
- Markelle Fultz ($17M). 14.0 ppg / 3.9 reb / 5.7 apg / 56.4% TS ... vs... 12.9 ppg / 3.6 reb / 6.6 apg / 53.4% TS.
- Monte Morris ($9.8M). New city. Almost exactly the same guy.
_________
- Dennis Smith Jr. is still a negative player when all is said and done (-0.1 VORP)
- Mudiay. No.
- Coby White. Not really a lead facilitator, more of a better Nowell off the bench. Interestingly, his TS% has gone up and his PPG has gone down in each of the past 4 seasons.
_________
I like Tre Jones, in part because I'm a provincial rube, in part because we've seen this before, and in part because I think he might bring good value and is on the upside.
BUT... there are red flags.
- He played the most minutes for the worst team in the NBA. Are his stats padded because there was nobody else in San Antonio... or would they be more legit with much better teammates?
- His three point shooting is an issue. (28.5%). Is there hope for improvement? He shot 86% from the line. With Edwards playing more and more as the lead facilitator, can he hit three pointers enough to stay on the court with him?
_________
Initially, I was hoping in a best-case scenario that the Wolves could lure Tre Jones with a 3 yr/$20Mish offer. But then I thought that was a bit low, so I checked around a bit. He'll receive a qualifying offer from the Spurs for $6.25M. I think that probably pushes him closer to $10M annually in restricted free agency. The most anybody could offer him is 4 yr / $60M. Remember, Tyus Jones initially signed in Memphis for 3 years for $26.4M... and resigned at 2 years for $29M.
Re: Potential PG Trade Targets
I am a big Derrick White fan, but I don't see how we get him unless KAT is traded.
I agree that Orlando has a surplus of point guards in Fulltz, Anthony and Jalen Suggs. Anthony would be nice addition.
Free agents to target this off-season starts with Shake Milton. I've been very impressed with him when he gets big minutes. He should like opportunity to be eventual starter here and shouldn't cost us a lot. He's my number one free agent target. I was a fan of Kennedy Chandler in the draft and he was stuck behind both Ja Morant and Tyus Jones and so Memphis cut him late in season for somebody more able to help in the playoffs. I'd look to add Chandler on a cheap contract with a team option.
Hopefully, we can find someone from the above to address point guard. If that's not the case, next offseason, Tyus Jones is a free agent and we could try to bring him back home and selling him on being the heir apparent to Conley should be more appealing than being stuck behind a young Ja Morant.

Ben Simmons is in no way a playable option. He's done in the NBA after his deal is up.
Re: Potential PG Trade Targets
Starting stats for Tyus Jones and Shake Milton this year:
Tyus Jones started 22 games and shot efficiently with 50.0/41.5/77.8 splits and scored 16.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 8.1 assists with 1.5 turnovers (also 1.8 steals)
Shake Milton started 11 games and shot efficiently with 51.8/41.3/97.0 splits and scored 20.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.2 assists with 2.8 turnovers (0.7 steals). Shake has a 7 foot wingspan.
As you can see Shake, though on a smaller sample size, performed similarly to Tyus who got a lot of press about his starting performances. I'd be happy with either, but we could test run Shake next year and either keep him as successor to Conley or opt for Tyus in a year.

Gobert would be enough to get Derrick White. KAT is a guy you trade to the Celtics if you want Jaylen Brown.KG4Ever wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 8:35 am I am a big Derrick White fan, but I don't see how we get him unless KAT is traded.

I would put a lot of money on Pat Bev on the wolves next year. Been talking a ton and I mean a ton about the wolves on his podcast lately
Re: Potential PG Trade Targets
I like Derrick White, but given how much was given up for Gobert, I think Wolves keep him next year. Unless we get multiple first rounders back in addition to White, I'm fine with running it back. I'd be thrilled if we have Conley and Shake Milton to run point. Also, Ant and Slomo are good passers and KAT can be as well when in the post.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Tue May 02, 2023 10:55 pmGobert would be enough to get Derrick White.
