End of Season Trades?

Post by 60WinTim »

So, as I understand it, teams can still make trades over the next few days using the 2022-23 salaries and cap figures. The Wolves are more than 6 mil under the luxury tax threshold, so they could make a trade taking back more $s than they send out. And if I understand my CBA correctly, Prince, Jmac and Nate are all under contract for this season and next, which means they can still be traded in the next few days. But their contracts for next season don't become guaranteed for another week or so, meaning they could be traded now, but then released immediately by their new team, thus providing some salary cap / luxury tax relief for not only this season, but next season as well.

So, teams facing the luxury tax might be interested (Terrance Mann or Bones?). Or teams looking to create some extra room under the cap.

Washington has been brought up before, but look what is going on there now: in addition to acquiring Jordan Poole, they have Tyus Jones, Monte Morris and Delon Wright. Those three are all on the final year of their contract. It sure seems at least one of them could be available.

Something to keep an eye on over the next few days!

Yeah, it's still the big gaping hole in our "run it back" roster construction post-draft. Granted, some of us believe JMac is a very capable backup PG, but he really tanked his value after he got back from injury and lost total confidence in his outside shot. Morris, Jones, and Wright all would be upgrades on paper, with Jones and Morris being borderline starting-caliber PGs.

So I gotta believe our front office has been and will continue to be talking to Washington....

Okay, ignore this thread. It turns out that only the guaranteed portion of the contract will count as outgoing salary at this point. So the idea of salary relief is a misnomer...

A trade can still be made, but the salary of Prince, for example, would have to be guaranteed before he can be traded.

The Wolves do have a couple smaller trade exceptions (4.3 million and 3.6 million) they could use although finding a worthwhile use for either of those isn’t terribly likely.
