Wiggins Trade

Post by Carlos Danger »

Just happened to peek at the Warriors last game. A couple things came to mind:

1.) What the hell happened to Wiggins? He's averaging 12.6 points/game? That is a career low by a mile. This isn't meant to be a rip. I don't follow other teams. I'm actually asking what happened? I seem to recall he had some personal issues last season?

2.) On the flip side, when we traded Wiggins for DLO, we had to throw in a first round pick. They turned that pick into Jonathan Kuminga..who for the first couple years didn't look like much of anything. Until this year. Suddenly he's a starter and one of their better players? Didn't see that happening. But good reminder that sometimes we have to patient with young guys. He's still only 21. Gotta hope the Wolves can develop their draft picks like that...

That's why I'm pretty disappointed in how Connelly has handled the G-League this season. Kuminga didn't need the G-League because he was getting regular playing time off the bench with the Warriors his first two seasons. But since our prospects (Moore, Jr., Minott, and Miller) get zero minutes of meaningful NBA action, we should be heavily invested in the Iowa team. Instead, it appears they have just given up on it and have a bunch of guys not under contract playing out the string. What a waste....

It could be a couple things. He doesn't like the development they are getting from them. Two they simply need bodies for garbage time / risk of injuries / foul outs to starters. Say both Garza and Naz got hurt or foul out in the same game after we are missing both KAT and Rudy. You got to have depth just in case. Triple overtime? You never know.

Unlikely to be sure, but do you really want to lose a game if a couple guys go down with ankles or foul out and now you have no forwards /centers? There is always a chance guys get minutes.

As far as Wiggins. I'd say we both won that trade. They got a great version of him for a chip (for a short time to be sure) and we don't have that half asser on our team.

Different situations, Q. Kuminga was a lottery pick, and lottery picks are expected to contribute right away in some form. The three guys you mention who are not getting minutes were late first round or second round picks, and clearly not ready for the NBA...two of them might still be considered prospects, and one is clearly a draft bust. Anyway, if I were Kerr, I would also be playing Kuminga. And if I were Finchie, I wouldn't want any of our three guys on the court while we're battling for playoff positioning. We have a very good top 10 in our rotation, and I'm not surprised that very late draft picks can't break into it.

Kuminga was the 7th pick in the draft. The Wolves should have listened to Gupta and either not traded a first in the Wiggins/D Lo trade or at least lottery protected it. Kuminga would have looked pretty good in a Wolves uniform.

Your last sentence. We do have a good top 11, even without Towns.

Conley, Morris, Jmac, Ant, Naw, Jaden, Rudy, Naz, Kyle, Garza, Warren

Send those other dudes down for good so they actually can get in rhythm and play. What does 1 minute of garbage time do for any of them? Finch won't play them even without Rudy/KAT and foul trouble - he would just pivot to a small ball scheme.
