Wolves Offseason Forward Options

Post by Q-is-here »

Includes Archetype and year by year salary left on contract starting with 2026-27. I excluded higher-end options that would require us to trade someone like Rudy or Ayo or an $18M+ type of free agency contract. I included last year's salary if they are a free agent.

POA Wing Defenders
Dorian Finney-Smith - $13.4M, $13.4M, $13.4M (Player Option)
Isaac Okoro - $11.8M
Matisse Thybulle - Unrestricted Free Agent (Last year's salary = $11.5M)
Derrick Jones Jr. - $10.5M
Caleb Martin - $10M, $9.4M (Player Option)
Jaylen Wells - $2.3M, $2.5M, (Team Option)

Positionless Swiss Army Knife
Rui Hachimura - Unrestricted Free Agent ($18.3M)
Naji Marshall - $9.4M
Kyle Anderson - Unrestricted Free Agent ($9.2M)
Jeremy Sochan - Unrestricted Free Agent ($7.7M)
Dean Wade - Unrestricted Free Agent ($6.6M)

Stretch Power Forward/Centers
Kelly Olynyk - Unrestricted Free Agent ($13.4M)
Guerschon Yabusele - Unrestricted Free Agent ($5.5M)
Kevin Love - Unrestricted Free Agent ($4.2M)
Jock Landale - Unrestricted Free Agent ($2.3M)

Traditional Power Forward
Marvin Bagley III - Unrestricted Free Agent ($2.6M)
Precious Achiuwa - Unrestricted Free Agent ($2.1M)

Wing Shooter/Scorer
Khris Middleton - Unrestricted Free Agent ($33.3M)
Kevin Huerter - Unrestricted Free Agent ($17.9M)
Kelly Oubre Jr. - Unrestricted Free Agent ($8.4M)

IDEA

fold in to the existing trade:

Lu Dort to Minnesota, Josh Green and some seconds from OKC to the Bulls and some fake 2nd to OKC from someone to clear salary for the Thunder. OKC does Dort a solid to get him his salary for this year and a starting spot on a winning team.

Dort gets POA assignment from Jaden.

I don't know why but Bagley has always intrigued me. Derick Jones JR would be a dream, but we can't afford him.

Keeping in mind that the most we’ll be able to offer is a contract starting at just over $6 million using the taxpayer MLE, I would target the following two free agents as realistic options who would provide quality depth as forwards off the bench:

Free-Agent PF Target Profiles

1. PRECIOUS ACHIUWA
A highly athletic, energetic frontcourt player whose scouting profile defines him as a high-motor, versatile defender and elite rebounder, though he remains limited by a raw offensive skill set and occasional lapses in discipline. Standing 6’9” with a 7’2” wingspan, Achiuwa has transitioned from a raw draft prospect out of Memphis into a proven, reliable depth piece in the NBA. He put together a breakout 2025–26 regular season with the Sacramento Kings, starting a career-high 57 games.

Physical Tools & Profile
* Elite Length: Possesses a 7'2.25" wingspan and a 9'0" standing reach.
* Explosive Verticality: Acts as a natural lob threat and an aggressive, powerful above-the-rim finisher.
* Lateral Quickness: Features incredibly rare open-court speed and lateral agility for a player of his size.

Defensive Scouting
* Positionless Versatility: Capable of checking fluid 3s and small-forward wings, guarding true 4s, and sliding up to center in small-ball lineups.
* Shot Altering: Uses his quick second jump and wingspan to contest shots effectively.
* Foul Discipline: Highly rated for his ability to contest and wall off drivers without committing shooting fouls.

Offense & Rebounding
* Glass Eater: A relentless force on the offensive glass who routinely generates second-chance opportunities.
* Transition Weapon: Thrives when grabbing a rebound and instantly running the floor or filling lanes on the fast break.
* Shot Limitation: Struggles as a self-creator. He is highly dependent on playmakers setting him up in the pick-and-roll or via dump-off passes

Statistics 2025–26 Regular Season Average:
- Points 10.1 PPG
- Rebounds 6.7 RPG
- Assists 1.4 APG
- Field Goal 52.8%
- Blocks / Steals 1.6 Stocks

2. JEREMY SOCHAN
An elite, hyper-versatile defensive specialist with a highly restricted offensive game. Drafted 9th overall in 2022 by the San Antonio Spurs out of Baylor, the 6'8", 230-pound forward evolved from a high-upside prospect into a specialized rotation piece.

Defensive Strengths
* 1-through-5 Switching: Elite lateral quickness and footwork allow him to lock down perimeter guards and switch onto frontcourt bigs.
* Isolation Lockdown: Statistically one of the league's best isolation defenders, holding opponents to an elite 0.57 points per possession.
* High-Motor Help: Excellent weak-side awareness, rotation instincts, and active hands to disrupt passing lanes.
* Physicality & Size: Possesses an ideal 7-foot wingspan and durable frame to absorb contact at the rim.

Offensive Weaknesses & Developmental Limits
* Inconsistent Shooting: His jump shot features a robotic, two-motion release with an inconsistent trajectory, keeping him below 30% from deep.
* Free-Throw Struggles: Possesses a career sub-60% mark from the free-throw line, often forcing him out of late-game offense.
* Limited Shot Creation: Lacks advanced ball-handling and the offensive creativity to generate his own looks in the half-court.
* Specialist Role: His limited scoring package capped his development as a top-10 pick, routing him into a low-usage, defensive-minded "glue guy".

Thanks Lip, I know you’re obsessing over this and I appreciate it! Here’s what Claude tells me the Wolves could acquire for $6 million/year:

1. Marvin Bagley III — higher offensive ceiling/stretch shooting, same price range, arguably better stylistic fit replacing Reid’s floor-spacing.
2. Precious Achiuwa — better real defensive versatility and proven 2025-26 production; main risk is Sacramento incentive to retain him.
3. Jeremy Sochan — youngest, highest defensive ceiling, but more raw offensively.
4. Kyle Anderson (re-sign) — safest, no recruiting risk.
5. Dean Wade — Pure shooting/spacing fallback. He’s drawn interest as a stretch-four replacement type, similar in mold to Royce O’Neale — less ceiling than Bagley or Sochan, but a safe floor-spacer if Minnesota wants shooting insurance over upside.

I'd be cool with Precious. I think there is more than enough offense of this team so I just want defensive demons lol

I'd say it is possible to get both Bagley and Achiuwa. PF and C minutes are here for those who want to show up and take them. Both of those guys have reason to come here, be surrounded by superb talent, and show out. Bringing Prince back also intrigues me

There aren't really a lot of good options out there for what we need, huh?

Tim Connelly is going to have to work some magic here.

Given all these guards, it's hard not to imagine that he'll definitely move Green, and probably strongly consider trading Donte's expiring contract, though it's not clear what value that could bring back. With the lottery reform, it takes away the incentive for a team to trade for Donte in order to be bad one more year before trying to sign him next offseason and bounce back a bit.

We're in a tough spot when it comes to trying to get a decent PF who can space the floor (this is absolutely needed next to Rudy or Beringer) and balance out this roster a little.
