Vikings vs Chargers game thread

Post by bleedspeed »

I think this is the game that shows who the Vikings really are. Should be a great game.

27-21, Chargers win. Philip Rivers will be too much for the very solid Vikings defense.

I'll be basking in the sunlight at The Bank for the game so I won't be posting, but it should be an interesting game. The Vikings will struggle to contain Rivers, and the Chargers will struggle to stop Peterson. But I heard a stat on In the Zone this morning that tells me who is going to struggle more: the Chargers are giving up 3.7 YPC...BEFORE contact! That's how far offensive lines are pushing the Chargers back before the Chargers even touch the ball carrier, and we all know what Peterson can do after contact.

Peterson runs for 200 yards, and the Vikings win 28-24.

Yep. San Diego's been killed against the run. Unfortunately, our head coach (who is falling out of favor with the intelligent fans) continues to give our best run stuffer a healthy day of inactivity, Ryan Carrethers. Absolutely embarrassing that he'd rather send out two down linemen over and over again.

Quarterback's the most important position in all of sports. That's where I believe this game will be won.

I think the outcome will have a lot to do with how effectively Gordon (and Woodhead?) can run the ball. Last week, the Vikings showed absolutely no respect for the Lions' running game and had their nickel defense on the field for all except about 12 snaps. Their run defense was still effective even with only 2 linebackers on the field, and having 5 defensive backs most of the game really frustrated Stafford. If Gordon can force the Vikings to put Greenway (and Hodges) on the field a little more often, Rivers will be much more successful.

By the way, the media is trying to hype the Gordon vs. Trae Waynes matchup of first rounders since they were high school teammates and best friends. It's a cute story, but unfortunately not really a story. Waynes has really struggled early in his career and is almost certain to be inactive tomorrow.

Should be an entertaining game on a perfect warm fall day.

On the Waynes Gordon thing it's still a good story they meet on the field living out a dream for the first time together on the 3rd week of their rookie seasons. It's a good story no matter their draft positions but both guys are locks to be in the league for a few years.

As for Waynes struggling I am not so sure I would say that. The Vikings nickle guy Captain could be the starting CB for some teams (maybe not a good starter but anywho) and is paid like one. When was the last time we had this kind of legit CB talent? I can't remember anytime where that was the case. If we picked a guy in say the 3rd round you almost hoped he could start. Waynes is being brought along slowly partly because they can. I am not saying he is doing great or whatever but I don't know if he is actually struggling. Also I believe they have him playing ST so it's quite possible he will be active.

Sounds similar to what the Chargers are doing with their second round pick, Denzel Perryman. He's got the talent and has shown enough ability to play right now, but the Chargers are super deep at ILB with Donald Butler, Manti Te'o and Kavell Conner. They've been bringing him along slowly, not trying to throw him in the fire too soon. On the other hand, he's been an absolute menace on special teams. He currently leads the NFL in special teams tackles, which is impressive. Combine him with Pro Bowler Darrell Stuckey on ST and we've had some pretty solid kick coverage.

@christomasson: Vikings inactives: Diggs, Kerin, Heinicke, Hunter, Robinson, Ford. Price

Sirles is active for the first time this year and Fusco is starting. Lots of revenge vibe (probably not though lol) with Sirles Harris and Norv going against their former team. Cam it seems like the Chargers may be pretty loaded with Oline talent that they have let go of 2 guys the last 2 years that seem to be at least quality guys especially Harris. Thoughts?

Another fun note about Sirles is he is engaged to Emma Stevens the former goalie for the NE Women's soccer team. Her senior year is when I started watching the team play. She was terrific in goal a smart but aggressive tough keeper that was fun to watch. She is now an assistant coach at a small school in Kansas.

Here is a fun highlight of Emma and the following part of the clip was NE celebrating winning the Big 10 regular season championship. I was at this game and it was a fun experience to see it live and up close.

Rudolph with a costly drop but both those passes were not the best. That was a poor outdone for Teddy as a fantasy player for me. Lol

I'll take the big win, but something is just off with the passing game. I was hoping the offensive balance between AP and the passing game would give us a top 10 offense, but so far it's just been the running game winning us the last two. I'm nervous of what will happen in games we get behind when the ground game is taken away from us. We don't seem to be taking too many big shots down the field which is what our WR corp is for with all that speed. Also, Sendejo would be the guy to whiff and take out Rhodes. That's a huge blemish on Speilman's record for never finding a safety to pair with Harrison. The defense overall has been pretty dominant in the trenches since the SF game. Shutting down Detroit and San Diego on the scoreboard is no easy task. Long-term the nickel with Barr and Kendricks as the linebackers should be a strong package to keep on the field for most of the game. They're still not the exact team I think everyone thought they could be coming into the year which is scary given the performance the last two games.
