Re: Free Agency
Put me down for against.
First of all, tell me the last guy who had a 5+ ERA at AA in his age 21 year and went on to have a good career.
Second, maybe '19 was an outlier, but it was an outlier for a lot of Twins. We miss you, James Rowson. When as the last time a Minnesota team missed an assistant this badly? Tomlin in 2007? Thibideau in 2005? Dungy in 1995?
Third, when Garver came back late last year, maybe he had a high swing/miss rate, but he also had a high swing/crush rate. How about trading Sano & Donaldson for pitching and go into the year with Miranda at 3rd and Garver at 1st, and signing a stopgap backup catcher until Garret Bradbury is ready next spring (half joking)?
And last, seriously, Royce Lewis is going to be 23 in two months. So another top 5 pick at SS collecting Social Security in the minors?

So who is playing SS in your scenario?
The biggest miss rate for Garver is games missed.
FWIW the first guy I looked up was Ryan Pressly who had a 5+ era in AA as a 23 year old and that was the season before the Twins picked him in the rule 5 draft. Lol

Lewis. He has to have his rookie year sometime. What better time than when the Twins are probably going to struggle due to their below average starting pitching? (Unless they were able to strike it rich in a Sano and/or Donaldson trade(s))
If Garver moves to 1st, his health issues should be minimal.
I'll give you a half-point on Pressly. According to Baseball Reference, he had a bad ERA in High-A the first half of that year, but then had a sub-3 at AA the second half. Maybe he was working through an injury, maybe BOS's high-A park is fenway-level pinball machine.

You are right I did misread Pressly's stats. I have a much easier explanation for his success than what ball park he pitched in because at AA he was purely a reliever.
Lewis is your starting SS? Seriously? He hasn't even played at AAA yet, is coming off a major injury and hasn't played in real games in years. Maybe let him actually play some games to see if he can even play SS before throwing him into a full time major league role. There are some people that make the prospect lists that have some actual concerns about him as a prospect. I'm not sure I completely buy that (honestly who knows) but throwing him into the Twins SS doesn't make much sense to me.
What kind of pitching are you hoping to get for guys like Sano and Donaldson? I think it's pretty clear Sano is a negative contract at this point.

So if the plan is to make that guy a reliever then I may turn out to be wrong. It doesn't happen all of them time, but it has happened.
Wow. I was not aware that Lewis didn't play last year. If he was healthy, that is nothing short of an organizational FAILURE. IF HEALTHY, he should have gotten the Maggi/Riddle AB's in St Paul. Someday when I win powerball and own my own team, if I have to replace the GM/Pres of Operations, I am going to grab him/her by the shirt and remind them that just because the basement is there when you buy the house doesn't mean it's ok to start it on fire. That being said, Viola only had 58 innings in AAA, and Hrbek went from High A to the majors, so it can happen.
The Yankees had poor production at 1st, and Donaldson would be an improvement for a lot of teams. I am not as down on Sano as you. My biggest concern about Sano is his high DGAF rate. We have not seen his worst moment, on OR OFF the field. Remember the Kirby/Ridgedale story? Well, if I heard that story about Sano, I would think "Thank god people were there or she would be dead".
One of the reasons I wasn't THAT concerned about the lockout was that I am really concerned about the Twins' SP. I like Mays and Ober, but Pineda is a way better regression candidate than Nelson Cruz. So unless everybody is healthy and Thorpe makes the leap, I feel like this is 2011 all over again.

Re: Free Agency
Mays? Trevor May? He plays in New York now. Nelson Cruz is expected to sign with a team this week, perhaps even an NL team given the universal DH rule. Michael Pineda is a free agent and it's not certain he returns. Lewis Thorpe is 26-years old and hasn't even tossed 60 innings at the majors. What year is it again?
I'm sure you meant Joe Ryan, but the name was so off that I need to double check. When's the last time you actually paid attention to Twins baseball? Miguel Sano is hot doo-doo, with respect to his family. Royce Lewis hasn't played much baseball in the last two years, but you wanted him to start at shortstop? Is Lewis even the best shortstop prospect this organization has after acquiring Austin Martin? Oof, I can't even be certain you've heard that name before.

You're right, I meant Joe Ryan
The reason I mentioned Nelson Cruz is because I saw someone on this board say they didn't want Cruz because they thought he didn't have it anymore, right before he went out and had a .907 OPS in 85 games.
I believe that someone signs Pineda, and that this is the year he plays himself out of the league.
A .778 OPS may be disappointing, but not exactly "Hot doo-doo" (with respect to his family), and maybe now would be the time to move him, move Donaldson to 1st (if he is not moved as well), and call up Miranda.
The last time I paid attention to the Twins? July 31st.

Re: Free Agency
First and foremost...it's fun to be talking baseball again! I hated both the owners and players during the dispute, but all is forgiven now that we have ball back.
Second, this is a terrific start to free agency. While I have to admit I was not all that familiar with the "Hawaiian Hustle", I love what I'm reading about him. Late last season he was tied with Simmons for second most runs saved (behind Correa) and actually was ranked ahead of Correa in SABR Defensive Index late in the season. There is a clear Big Three defensive SS's in the AL, and we just traded for one of them. And while he slumped at the plate during the hot Texas summer, he hit well early and late and finished at .271 with 8 HR's and 53 RBI in 158 games (i.e....durable). I'll take that out of my 9 hole any day, especially with the defense he provides. I liked Garver too, but this is what we really needed.
