I liked him when we drafted him, but didn't think he was ready to contribute in the NBA. I think his shot has gotten much better, though. He should be able to play tonight. Hope he sticks.

Detroit was ready to sign them if they could clear a spot. He was playing for their owned D-League team and went to camp with them. I wonder if he looks decent if they will shop Mo Williams.

I agree with a couple of the takes here...specifically:

1) From the video Q posted, Brown's shot looks a lot different than it did during college and his short stint with us...much smoother release and better arc. His "makes" from the outside before looked almost accidental, but he has definitely improved.
2) Still, he is known as more of a distributing PG (although D-League doesn't reward assists as much as points) and I'm sure Flip would prefer having a true distributing PG backing up Rubio. I don't know what Mo could bring at the deadline (a late 2nd rounder from a contender wouldn't be worth much), but I expect Flip will try to shop him. Lorenzo was clearly on his radar screen at the time of the 2013 draft, but there was no room for him as they tried to give Shved one more chance. After some seasoning in the D-League, perhaps he is ready to be a decent backup PG.

Here's a scouting report that might help to highlight what Brown can contribute. Hopefully he can contribute meaningfully this time around. I remember watching him in his first stint with the Wolves and being impressed with his athleticism, but underwhelmed with his shooting and running of the offense.

It's interesting how his assists have gone down this season in the D-league. At NC State, it was one of his biggest selling points - being the consummate floor general. I think they had him take on a bigger scoring role at Grand Rapids and perhaps he's playing off the ball with them quite a bit (?). Don't know, but either way, what we need more than anything is a PG that can defend and fight through screens, while also being a decent set-up guy on offense. If he's hitting his outside shot, then great. But defense and running an offense are #1 and #2 on my list of things we need him to do competently.

Thanks for the scouting report, gymrat...sounds good to me. I didn't recall much about his defense at NC St., but this report sounds excellent. Has to be a defensive upgrade over Mo and Zach.

Q, I also wondered about his poor assist to turnover ratio, because I remember that as being a strength of his. The D league is different of course, with players looking for high scoring and flashy passes to attract attention, and both of those goals will lead to fewer assists and more TO's. I don't know, but I suspect that his PG skills will be better in the NBA than what he has shown in the D League, but his shooting (although improved) will be worse. If he can play reasonable D, distribute the ball, and not force shots, I will applaud Flip for stealing him from the Pistons.
