Anyone watch Gonzaga demolish #2 UCLA last night? Dicky V nearly wet his pants gushing over Holmgren. I thought he was going to have a heart attack when Chet blocked and corralled a shot, and then weaved down the court for a dunk...including a behind the back dribble! He was only credited with 4 blocks, but he altered far more and normally hot-shooting UCLA was held to 34.8% shooting. Gonzaga has so many weapons on offense, Chet defers much of the time, so his offensive stats are not going to be eye-popping this season as the Bulldogs cruise to another final four appearance. But with his height, post footwork and sweet 3-point stroke, I think he would have averaged over 20 PPG had he stayed home and played for the Gophers.
We're all enjoying Vando playing next to KAT the past 4 games, but just imagine what our front court would look like with Holmgren next to KAT...I'll be dreaming about that possibility all year.

You better start analyzing prospects pegged to go around 20th or later

If you're not watching Chet Holmgren, you should be. He has moved to the top of Evan Miya's college rankings and he deserves to be. Yeah, he's skinny, but his unique combination of length, athleticism and skills makes him a game changer like we have seldom seen. He's averaging 14.7/9.2/2.1 with 3.4 blocks per game on a team that doesn't need his scoring. He's making over 46% of his threes and has a 73.6 TS%. And his net rating on Basketball Reference is absurd...an ORtg of 131.4 and a DRtg of 78.1 for a net rating of +53.3! That rating is better than Zion's 45.7 or Cade's 9.4, or KAT's 48.7 in college. They didn't have net ratings back in Shaq's day, but he's the only player I can think of who would have had a better one. People worry about his weight, but he actually seems to play better as the competition gets better and bigger...he seemed to be just sleepwalking through the non-conference schedule when this loaded Gonzaga team didn't need him, but his play has been elevated now that they are playing better teams.
The Wolves strong play has them out of the Holmgren sweepstakes, but he is a unique offensive and defensive talent that is going to make some NBA team very happy. And as an admitted provincial rube, I'm celebrating what he is doing!

But the top of the draft is loaded with skilled big men, and that's good for our Woofies if we are still size-deprived by the end of the summer. 4 of the top 6 picks in some of the mocks are talented guys 6'10" or bigger, and that doesn't even include 6'10" Drew Timme who went off for 37 last night for Gonzaga. I think the Wolves are going to come out of this draft with a very good big man.
I've pounded the table here for years wanting more size in the frontcourt, and I think the league is swinging back to playing big to some degree, but I want a high-level guard/wing out of this draft if the Wolves find themselves deep in the lottery. That means I'm looking at Jaden Hardy, Josh Minott, Jaden Ivey, and Caleb Houstan.
That type of losing season would clearly signal a rebuild and I'd want this one to have a different blueprint than the last handful that were mainly centered around bigs -- Al Jefferson, Kevin Love, Karl-Anthony Towns. Give me some high-level guard/wing play and fill in around them.
Not to mention, a rebuild indicates that Towns would be traded and the list of potential suitors for him have quality/intriguing bigs that would be dealt to Minnesota for him.
I am confident they go wing or guard. Big men are so easy to pickup for free now, we just don't seem to do it.
