Is Cleveland really going to offer Collin Sexton and three first-round picks? That seems a bit rich. In one deal they throw Isaac Okoro into the mix too? I don't see either being their offer, but I agree that the Cavs are in the mix to some degree.

I also don't think Philadelphia has any interest in Kevin Love's contract this year and next, especially when they're going to have to near-max Sexton to retain him. That luxury tax bill would be a absolutely brutal.

Would the Cavs offer three first-round picks along with Sexton? Not if they didn't have to. I agree that would be a bit rich and I think a more balanced deal would be Sexton + players and 2 future 1st-round picks along with that Houston 2nd. My sense that Cleveland has the best shot at Simmons right now is tied primarily to Colin Sexton as the best available talent and fit for Philly in the Simmons sweepstakes -- relative to Beasley, VanVleet and DLO. His scoring, scoring efficiency, motor and age are really attractive and the Sixers would get that next year for roughly $6M and have RFA control of him next Summer. That Houston 2nd-round pick is also a really valuable asset to offer Philly. I disagree with you on Kevin Love. But if you're right, then a package built around Sexton and Ricky (something like the second package I suggested) would be the deal that lands Simmons in Cleveland.

Would the Cavs. Include Okoro in the second deal I suggested? Again, only if they had to. If the competition is Beasley, Prince and 4 future unprotected 1st round picks from the Wolves, I think the Cavs would have multiple ways to beat that deal with Sexton as the centerpiece of their outgoing package to Philly. The question is what the Cavs would have include beyond Sexton and Ricky to beat that Wolves deal. I would think that two unprotected 1st-round picks and the Houston's 2022 2nd-round pick would probably be enough without including Okoro. Or perhaps they would only have to part with one future 1st if they included Okoro.

I think the sixers will be reluctant to trade him within the conference. They would probably take a little less from a Western conference team. I'm thinking they will use a competitive offer from Cleveland to drive up the price for the Wolves or another Western team.

Unless the Cavs value Simmons REALLY highly I agree with you. I think the Cavs are going to be interested but only if they can get Simmons for a great price. I don't think the Cavs are in the same position the Wolves are in they are still building. I don't think they are going to want to give up many future picks for Simmons. I think they can benefit most by being part of a Simmons deal and cashing in on one of their guards and getting multiple assets. That's my opinion maybe the Cavs are wanting to take another step. I guess they could have a giant frontcourt with Simmons as a PF.

According to recent reports, the Cavs are very interested in Simmons. Separate from their interest in Simmons, I've heard or read reports that Cavs ownership and management are frustrated with rebuilding and really want to take a big step next season. Moreover, they want to move on from experiment with two 6'1" PGs in their starting lineup - hence the interest in moving Sexton. So they are very much in the same position as the Wolves - an young bottom-feeding lottery team with young talent that desperately wants to take a big step forward next season. Having Sexton and Houston's 2nd-round picks would allow the Cavs to trade for Simmons without completely mortgaging their future by sending Philly half their 1st-round picks for the rest of this decade.

I agree with Cool that the Sixers would prefer to trade Simmons to a Western Conference team and that would give the Wolves and Kings an edge over Cleveland and Toronto. But I think Cleveland and Toronto can offer a better win-now package than the Wolves.

I'm sorry I don't quite understand. When Rosas left us with no picks this last draft we all bitched and moaned but now with this Simmons deal I see us again throwing all of our first round drafts at him? Don't we want to keep those first rounders instead? Just curious.

Fair question, Nollr. My opinion is lottery draft picks are very important to a bottom feeding team, and they need to hold on to them tightly. That's one of the reasons I was so unhappy with Rosas giving up a certain lottery pick in the Dlo/Wig deal. But I'm convinced Simmons instantly transforms us into a 50+ win team, and that changes the importance of first round picks drastically. My belief here is based on reviewing the core Simmons played with in Philly and whom he would play with in Minnesota...both cores are good, but I prefer ours slightly. A 50+ team gets picks in the high 20s where you sometimes strike "gold" with a McDaniels, but more often get a player who is not going to move the needle much if at all. 50+ win teams automatically become attractive destinations for veterans looking for a ring, and they tend to supplement their stars with solid free agent vets rather than the draft.

That's why I don't care too much about future picks if we are able to pick up a game changer like Simmons in return. If you don't believe Simmons makes us a 50+ win team, then by all means stay with the long game strategy...continuing to suffer through non-playoff seasons in hopes that a future draft pick will finally bring this team some success. I prefer the swing for the fences move of surrendering picks to pick up Simmons.

I think we can agree that the Wolves timeline has a more "use before expiration date" on it than Cleveland. I'm sure the Cavs absolutely want to make a move to get better the question is how much are they willing to give up in terms of future draft picks to do so. I would like to land Simmons but if some other team is truly willing to pay a super high price for him fine I'll go back to getting my confetti bomb all lined up for when Vanderbilt signs his contract. It's all situational. I was maybe the only one not bitching about being without draft picks this summer as a result of the D'Angelo Russell trade because I still think Russell at his best, which we haven't seen yet in Minnesota, is worth Andrew Wiggins and Jonathan Kuminga -- an intriguing young player, but far from a blue-chipper. That trade will always make sense in my mind and I have no issues with Gersson Rosas pulling the trigger.

Trading multiple picks for Ben Simmons will similarly come down to how you feel about said player. Simmons just turned 25 and has an All-NBA bid and multiple All-Star nominations under his belt. He just finished runner-up in Defensive Player of the Year voting to Rudy Gobert when it seems apparent that Simmons could have and maybe should have won that award. He's listed at 6'11, 240-pounds -- though might be slightly smaller -- and has guard skills that no one else his size possesses. Does he come with flaws? Of course he does or else he wouldn't be available. But if you can envision Simmons being a huge piece of the puzzle for Minnesota becoming a contender, then why exactly would you let draft capital restrict you? You cash that in and go for it. If you think Simmons won't move the needle for the Wolves, then by all means sit on your hands and roll with the current roster.
