That's the thing. They get one year to properly evaluate if there is anything in the tank. There was so little to be done with the financial constraints of their franchise and Jackson seems to be inching them back to relevance. I actually love Hornacek for them too. I like this deal a lot and trust Jackson's evaluation of Jerian Grant.
Yeah, I guess I can see the salary angle to it...but how long were the guys they traded away locked in for? How much of that money would have been freed up anyway?

I think Thibs would make him play to his strengths. If he just focused on his man and freed up Towns to rove a bit more I could see them being an elite unit. But if they are constantly switching down low I'd be worried about Faried's read and react. So strange since his is clearly a gifted athlete. I do like thinking about the intensity that Faried would bring, would be fun to watch.
Well, he certainly fits the "do shit" profile I love, i.e. he doesn't need to score the ball all the time to be effective. And he adds toughness and ferocious energy in a slot most likely playing between Wiggins and KAT. He would be very complementary in that regard.
But still....for all the energy, rebounding, and killer games against the Wolves, his overall defense is sort of meh. But perhaps I'm nit-picking a bit here. Not every starter can be the perfect two-way player.
I didn't mean to imply that he is even above average at this point defensively. I just know that Thibs is coming from a position and a coaching tree which believes that anyone can defend. I am all on board with this. Hell Vince Carter has looked like an excellent defender late in his career. It's hard not to look at Faried and think that he couldn't become an elite defender in this league. If Thibs is truly interested, I assume that is the angle.

That is true too.
Lopez is more of a sure thing, and Noah's more of a gamble, depending on how much he can get back to form. But I'd love his passing for us, and he was a more mobile defender. Unfortunately, I have to so "was" because it's been a couple season, and it's not clear how much he'll be able to get back to his old self.
Calderon's $7M was coming off after next year. Lopez's $13M per year is great value. Could have dumped that at any time if they actually needed to. The salary angle is a weak one, IMO. To me, Chicago got the best end of this trade.
Well if Rose works out its a great deal for the Knicks. If not they can let him go and have cap space after this year. I wouldn't say that's a great worst case downside of the deal but alive seen worse.
For Chicago a sneaky part of the deal is they get Calderon who isn't the player he once was but what he can still do is shoot 3's. Guess what Hooberg wants to do? Shoot 3's. He should at least provide something decent for the year he will be there and I can see Hoiberg possibly getting a little something more out of him than he was giving the Knicks. Obviously getting Lopez and just moving on from Rose is the best part of the deal but Calderon could help them a bit.

Calderon's pretty much just salary filler. I do think there's a sneaky part to this trade for them, though, and that's Jerian Grant. I think he'll have plenty of opportunities next year to show what he can do.
