2019 NBA Playoffs Thread
Re: 2019 NBA Playoffs Thread
Derrick White is something else. How come Pop isn't just automatic COY every year. He should have about 10 of them.
Re: 2019 NBA Playoffs Thread
I had Derrick White on my fantasy team and so I've known about how talented he is (he'd be an allstar in the East). Of course, Dumbass Thibs drafted Patton (who is already out of league) instead of him, John Collins and Jarrett Allen. DeJounte Murray was another late round gem for them and it will be interesting to see which of them starts as point guard next year (I'd think White shifts to shooting guard and sends Forbes to bench (he was an undrafted FA). We need to hire someone with a pulse from the Spurs organization to handle our draft.

We already hired Layden. We got our Spurs brain trust firing on full cylinders.

Patton pick was terrible but got super unlucky because of injuries what Patton didn't have in college.
Also we hired Layden and he came from the Spurs organization. So you want Layden back I see.

Yep. Derrick White was the 29th pick in the 2017 draft. Pop is a great coach, but the Spurs know how to identify talent. Manu, Tony Parker, DeJounte Murray - all late 1st or 2nd round picks. K Leonard was a guy most other teams didn't have rated nearly as high as the Spurs. The Wolves scouts apparently loved Patton and Adrienne Payne. The Wolves front office needs an overhaul top to bottom.
Glen Taylor needs to find out who in the Spurs organization (assistant GMs, scouts) has been identifying and advocating for drafting these talented under-the-radar prospects. Then Glen needs to do everything possible to hire them at a higher level - hire Spurs scouts as assistant GMs, hire Spurs assistant GM as our GM and hire Spurs GM as Wolves PBO. Or find out who in the Jazz organization was advocating for drafting/signing Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert and/or Joe Ingles. Then pursue him of them.

I do think there is quite a bit of luck in picks. I mean the that same Jazz team picked Exum, Kanter and got nothing out of Grayson Allen this year.
I also think wolves got super unlucky with Patton. Patton might of sucked but 3 huge foot injuries in 2 years killed his career (I know there are rumors about the bad work ethic).
I do think the Wolves need an overhaule though and the names that have come up for PBO I've liked do far.
Just wish we could find one diamond in the rough. I mean Pek is probably the only above average late 1st or 2nd round pick the wolves have drafted. (Okogie could become that also)

I think Layden was an admin guy for the Spurs. I think the Spurs were smart enough to keep Layden far away from any draft decisions.

Layden was the Spurs assistant GM, he took over for the current Jazz GM when he was hired.
Layden sucks but played a decent role with the spurs
*, Layden held that role from 2012-2016 and of those drafts only Kyle Anderson still in the league
Re: 2019 NBA Playoffs Thread
The spurs pick players but they develop them. They aren't just getting lucky or picking the right guy they develop players. Who have the Wolves developed in the last 10 years? Anyone that was good probably did so in spite of the organization. Rick Adelman did get the best out of Kevin Love but really who really overachieved? I guess you could argue Lavine but we also didn't see that trajectory play out. I still do not think it's fair to say Patton was a horrible pick without qualifying his injuries. Just picking the right talent isn't enough. You need a culture provided by consistent leadership from the front office and coaching staff to get the most out of your roster up and down it. Also Derrick White blows up the idea that you have to play NBA minutes to develop. He played 139 minutes as a rookie.
