Interesting trade for the two teams who have stockpiled assets the most.
Philly is finally pushing some of those onto the table for a guy they think is worth it...
Boston is just one step behind. It's still in the mode of acquiring assets, waiting for THAT guy to use them on.
Both teams are in good shape... with Boston's aspirations being more immediate.

That's the thing about this trade for Boston that I like, that they're actually ADDING another high first rounder. They can still keep competing with the Cavs in the East next year, adding Jackson or Tatum with the #3 pick PLUS potentially signing a guy like Hayward or Blake Griffin with their cap space. AND they still have two more probably high first rounders coming up they can use for a trade or to keep building through the draft. They've kind of got the best of both worlds. Ready to compete now, plus down the line.
The other piece to think about.....Boston saw Fultz in workouts. Maybe we need to assume that Boston isn't as sold on his talents vs those of other guys in the draft. I have to believe that if they saw the hands-down best player in this draft during those workouts, maybe this trade wouldn't have happened. Maybe they truly think there is a better prospect? The nice thing for Boston in this whole scenario is that the #2 pick is also expected to be a PG, leaving the cream of all non-PG guys for them to pick from.

I definitely believe that they believe multiple prospects are on Fultz's level. Whether that is actually accurate time will tell, but I think it's less Fultz dropping down a tier and more them raising 2-3 guys up a tier. In a PG driven league I don't believe that anyone in this draft is on his level but we'll see.
The trade makes sense on all levels. Fultz is the best prospect, but he isn't a surefire star. None in this draft are. Further, his fit in Boston is terrible. They already have a glut of 1 and 2 guards. Everyone knows Boston needs to beef up at the 3-5 positions. Like Hicks said, they now get the choice of their top forward AND they gained MORE assets. Ainge is ahead of the curve. The Celtics choices have been Jackson, Tatum, and Isaac from the get go. I'm betting they take Isaac because of his potential in 2 years, but I definitely can see Tatum there as they lack a second creator on offense or Jackson if they believe the way to beat the Cavs/warriors is stifling defense.
This was another great trade by ainge, and a great trade by colangelo.
Boston will be a powerhouse for years. I'm happy for them as they are my second favorite team.

I read today where Boston believes they are going to get the same guy at 3, that they would have taken at 1. If that's true and it might be, it's a great trade for Boston.

They took Jalen Brown last year at 3 and it's less than a year in but that's looking pretty solid right now.
